What do you use for your IM clients?

I have tried a few IM clients in the past and hated their interface. I also hate to install the latest Windows Live Messenger as it's full of bloat.

I only need MSN Messenger really (don't use Yahoo Messenger, AOL, or Google Talk)

Which IM Client are you using and would recommend?

I use Psi. It's clean and very lightweight. I use jabber and msn on it. Apparently there is an irc transport, but I just use mirc for that.

I tried Digsby and hated its interface and it keept asking me to login to my facebook account after every restart although I have authorized it full access. Also, it keeps like 3 icons telling me that it couldn't log into my gmail and hotmail accounts (I use my gmail account to access msn as I have signed up for passport.net)

So far I have tried Miranda IM and it seems to do the job and has a simple interface.

Not sure I want to try Psi even as the download from the site maxed out at 10 KB/s and it seems to have a 0.xx version number, meaning it is far from mature.

I have no idea how well it works, but don't get too hung up on version numbers. Every project has to start from 0, and if it does what you want it's mature enough.

Just tried Pidgin and it seems to be a bit better (interface wise at least) than Miranda IM

Ill stick to Pidgin for now 🙂

I haven't used it so I can't comment on Psi's specific stability, however version numbers are completely arbitrary. Just look at Chrome and FF for high version numbers that have become almost meaningless.

I use Pidgen. I switched a few years back when a Msn Communicator update came through and it started using around 800MB of ram from that point. When an IM app is using nearly a gig of ram, it's time to switch. I only had 2GB of ram at the time, too.

been using Miranda IM for years, and will continue to use it. it does everything i need, and if i need it to do more, i'm sure someone has written a plugin to do it.

Trillian is where its at.

Matrix, you do seem eager to learn with all these questions and polls recently.

I tried Pidgin but hated it's contact list.

I like Trillian, but it has become bloated nagware anymore. I'd love to find a similar contact interface but I haven't found one I like yet.

i stopped using trillian when they changed what the meaning of "lifetime" meant

I really want to drop it, but i'm used to it now. If I could find something that allowed Aim/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ and has better contact list features I'd switch in a second. Pidgin was just too plain I think, and with having 2 AIM accounts signed in, and it doubling my contact list due to the two names it was just annoying. At least trillian is smart enough to hide the duplicate contacts.

Well to be honest with you. I used to be an avid gamer / tweaker 5 years back. But since I started my working life, I hadn't had time for these things and don't have a single game installed on my computer now.

With that said, since I have been out of the software loop for a while. I ask a lot of questions as I want to know what is the best program for each task nowadays. You know what I'm saying? 😉
