What do you use for offsite backups?

The more I think about it, the more it bothers me that I don't have any offsite backups. If something was to happen to my house, everything I've ever worked on in my life would be gone. I'd have to start everything over totally from scratch. Countless years of work, and lot of stuff that is unrecoverable such as documentation that's taken me years to put together, complex server setups, source code to custom apps, pictures, etc.

I'm thinking of setting up public key ssh and rsync everything up to my dedicated server. I only have 120GB of space on the drive I plan to use for that so I could only backup the most critical stuff, which is probably source code and documentation. Stuff like pictures would be a huge loss but it's one of those things where the fact of loosing the house would greater anyway.

I've also thought of just having several 1TB drives and keep a few at the office in a rotation. I was actually doing that for a bit till I was moved offices but I have the room in my new office.

When I get my own house, I'll also have the option to have a vault in the shed or something so that is a plus. Though I'd have to keep it heated somehow as when I do a rotation, I don't think it would be good to turn on a HDD that's been sitting in -40 for a week.

For now I'll probably go with the ssh route as while I'm more limited on space and bandwidth, at least the benefit is that the data is completely out of the city. Should something huge happen like a large flood or tornado then the data is still safe as opposed to the other solutions, though the odds of such huge flood is retarded small, but you can never be too safe when it comes with data backups.

Just curious what other methods people are using these days for all of their personal data.
 
For work, Iron Mountain.

For home, I put my pics and home movies on Phanfare since it's unlimited (paid for account is at least).

Anything else, while it'd suck to lose it is pretty much replaceable. Pics are the one thing that isn't.

I do have things in my Google Docs also though that are important to me plus a fire proof safe for important physical docs.
 
the important stuff on my computer is all relatively small... almost all word/text documents. I burn them to dvd every couple months and leave the dvd at my parents house.

nothing fancy, but I wouldn't really care if I lost all my porn/movies/games/mp3's/etc.
 
This job, don't know, not my area.

Last job, we had an agency in town that would pick up tapes weekly.

Job before that, me or the other guy would alternate taking tapes home weekly.

yeah my important stuff at home is less than 10gb, its on a thumbdrive thats always in mah pocket (portable apps as well, and im at school often)

i have lots of stuff on my external drive that i can live without. music, movies, some other stuff, but the important shit i always have on me and a copy at home
 
Hmm never even thought of using a relative's house. Could probably ask my sister if I can drop off a raid 5 backup server in their basement or something and have ssh access and dump my files there. They have DSL lite though, so I'd probably piss them off by eating their bandwidth. 😛
