He was funny, open, sincere, and really into Larissa - basically, unlike Gil, he was everything she claimed she was looking for, personality-wise. In the end she was just not attracted to him. I don't blame her because (let's face it) physical attraction is very important in a relationship. Plus, I think I once read that it's human nature to seek out someone that is approximately as attractive as you are. If Brian was even moderately good-looking she probably would have picked him.

You just gotta feel bad for Brian... I don't think she led him on, but he really never had a chance of "winning".

The problem was that he was too eager.
