So I am just sitting here surfing OT and I go to make a phone call when I get this desplay message saying "SIM card error." I'm thinking WTF so I borrow my roomies cell and call T-Mobile, they tell me in a rather snobbish (sp?) manner than I need to go to the story and get a new SIM card which will cost me $20, but when I get it I need to call them and they will credit it to my account, I don't want account credit I want my $20 the other thing is how am I supposed to call when I don't have a phone, I am a college student and this thing is my primary phone, its the only one I have so my question is this.

I have heard of sales people that try to keep people in the contracts, they even go as far as to upgrade your phone, do you think my case would justify something like this? what do you think that I could get from them? right now I just have the phone that they give for free with the plan. LMK

it's a Nokia 6010 the one they give you for free when you sign up...I don't like it really but I didn't want to spend a bunch on a really expensive phone. Hoping that I can get a nice one for free or really cheap now :D

Is your contract up? Cause then you can use this to get some free stuff out of T-Mobile. Otherwise, your chances are not so good. However, they will replace your sim card at the store for free.

No my contrace just started like last month, however I talked to the guy at the store for a while and I was telling him the reason that I was changing is because my other company (US cellular) was jerking me around.

If you were near the end of the contract the retentions department would help, but right now they probably won't give you anything other than a new sim.

You won't get much. It's all based on how close to your contract expiration you are and how much you've paid to T-Mobile since the beginning of the current contract.

IIRC from working there, you'll get like $20 off of handsets.

 It's people like you who abuse the system that really piss me off and end up costing legitimately-deserving customers a lot of money in the long run. :|

And it's people like you that piss and moan that make the world an irratating place to live for people like me

legitimately deserving customers? Do I not fall under this class having paid my bill on time since I entered the contract, I think that when I hold up my end of the bargain and my phone (which is the only one that I have) is suddenly shut off I feel that I am entitled to a little return.

Nah you waste time trying to "act angry" to get something you know you don't deserve. You know you don't deserve it because you have to "act angry" to get it. Pay your bill on time and you *will* get an awesome discount near the end of or at the end of your contract. You did say earlier that you just started your contract a month ago, right?

If you *just* opened your account, you have to wait 3 months. If you just renewed your contract, I think it's only 30 days or something to be eligible. Anyhow, wait six months for like a $50 discount. At the end of 12 months, it should be a $120 discount through customer care.

HAHA, I just looked at what I could get since I've been out of contract for 1 month. As it turns out, I could save $20 by just buying a prepaid nokia 6101 for $150 and switch the simm cards VS signing another 1 year contract.

blah blah blah

You'd keep the same sim card either way. Your account is tied to that sim so unless you want a new account or specifically want to change the sim card that your account is programmed with, you'd just take it out of your current phone and put it in any other T-mobile phone or unlocked phone that works with sim cards.

yea, I am looking to upgrade my phone. I was just pointing out that the offers they had online for me were worse than if I had just bought the phone from their web page and swapped the simm chip from my old phone so I could get service on the new phone.

and It was $20 not $70 for extending my contract 1 year. I looked at the wrong line. I would only save $70 if I wanted the phone but didn't sign a 1 year extention

The prices you see online are usually only with opening new accounts. You can't open a new account with your current sim card without removing it off of your old account and making a special request to use the SIM on another account -which takes days and days and days to approve and go through. Once a SIM card is used on an account, it can't be used on any other account without some REALLY big hoops to jump through.

Anyway, like I said, prices on the t-mobile site are for people who don't currently have accounts.

I'm sorry if there is a confusion in the way I explained it, but I was pointing out that if I wanted a PRE-paid phone package I could get the Nokia 6101 for $150.

If I wanted the Nokia 6101 phone, but didn't want to extend my contract it would be $220, 1 year contract extention would be $170 for the phone.

So it would be be more benefitial for me to purchase the prepaid package that includes the Nokia 6101 and 60 minutes of pre-paid time for $150 then switch simm cards with my old phone so I would have the new phone without being on contract.

I hope that clears up why I thought what they were offering me was ridiculous.

oh well poop I don't know anything about t-mobile's pre-paid service. That was a whole different customer service department than I was working in. pre-paid and post-paid are two entirely different customer care departments, but t-mobile doesn't tell people that :p
