I build computers for friends as a hobby, and I always want to find the lowest prices for them. What do you guys think of this system I just built? These are final prices after shipping & taxes. The hard drive and CD-RW prices always vary depending on what "hot deals" are available at the time.

AMD Athlon XP 2000+..........................GoogleGear.com............$113.91
ECS K7S5A ...........................................Newegg.com...................$59.53
Nikao Cube Silver.................................Amamax.com..................$76.98
Codegen 350W Power Supply...........Dealsonic.com...............$31.73
Verbatim 40x CDRW............................Staples.com....................$41.18 AR
Crucial 512MB PC2100 RAM..............Crucial.com.....................$129.73
Teac Floppy Drive..................................Newegg.com...................$13.74
Lite-On LTD-163 16x DVD-ROM.........GoogleGear.com............$38.14
VisionTek GeForce3 Ti200 OEM.........Compuvest.com.............$85.47
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive.....Staples.com....................$94.48 AR
ThermalTake Case Fans x2.................Dealsonic.com................$17.93

Total......................................................................................................$702.82

Any suggestions on how and where to get cheaper parts and/or get better parts for the same price?

AR means what? I assume you check out pricewatch.com or equivalent. I got a fantastic deal on fans, heat sinks, arctic silver at KD computers online and they had (still have?) a shipping special - $5 for the whole deal - 2 HS, 10 fans, AS 3, some screws. Best prices around for EVERYTHING. Is that a good HD? I'm shopping but don't know what to get. Of course, I like 80 GB, probably the best byte for the buck right now.

Get rid of the 2000+ and get a 1600+ instead. You can oc it to 2100+ very easily. Plus its haf the price.

Get a nForce or KT333/400 board instead of the ECS board. The K7S5A if fine for a budget system, but falls short for a performance system. Agreed about getting a 1600+ and OC'ing it. Get some PC2700 RAM to go along with it, as well. Get a Western Digital 'SE' Caviar 8MB HD instead of the maxtor. Get a Radeon 8500 OEM instead of the gF3.
