What do you think of this router?

It's definitely not crap, but you can find a comparable one much cheaper than the Netgear. I just picked up the Linksys wireless router (check the hot deals forum) and it works great. Only $89 or so after $15 rebate at Office Depot. Stay away from the Dlink, I replaced 2 within a month.

I sooo want a wireless network. I did a lot of research in the Networking forum here @ AT and there's a lot of good info there.

I wish I could go with Wireless router but I heard that if you have cordless telephones and a wireless network they interfear with eachother. Anyone know if this is true?

This is why I'm glad I have a 900MHz cordless phone.

it's kinda mising the 802.11b support that I wanted, though.

BTW, I just picked up the netgear router for $125.19 out the door at staples w/ buy.com pricematch. Think that was a good deal?

I've been extremely happy with my Netfear FR314 router/firewall. Like it much better than the Linksys router that an old roommate had.

I run 802.11b and have (3) 2.4GHz cordless phones in the house with no apparent problems.

True for some 2.4 Ghz phones, since 802.11b gear also uses 2.4 Ghz band. DSS versions are absolutely the worst (Panasonic models particularly bad).

Avoiding interference can sometimes be avoided by setting non-DSS 2.4G phones to use a channel at one extreme end of the spectrum, and then setting the 802.11b gear to use a channel at the opposite extreme. This won't work for DSS phones, since they hop all OVER the range to work their security mojo.

I've had good luck with Orinoco wireless gear, especially on the NIC side. Lot of folks like SMC or NetGear. If you end up needing to boost your range, a removable antenna can be a godsend.

You work for SMC or something?

If you go wireless, I definitely recommend the SMC Barricade Wireless Router and ORiNOCO Clients. It is awesome 🙂 I've got 4 puters connected via wireless in here and the server is wired with CAT5. Not the fastest, but pretty sweet.

"You work for SMC or something?"

Look. You asked the question. 30 minutes later, you run out and buy what you want anyway. From MY experience, SMC is THE MOST bang for the buck you can get in a router. Any more questions?

I basically asked for a review of the netgear router, not "What other router besides this one should I get?"

second on the smc. i've worked with linksys, dlink, and netgear, smc's stuff has had the fewest problems (i have the 4 port wireless router ornery posted, too)
