What do you think of this NBA trade?

Knicks and Nets exchange Houston and Mutombo, straight-up. I figure the salaries must be close enough for the deal to work. Nets need a shooter, Knicks fans have wanted Mutombo for years, plus his contract is up in year (IIRC), so they could finally erase the mistake-that-was-Houston's-huge-contract.

I don't think it would ever happen, btw. 😀

nah wouldnt happen, houston's contract is bloated but he's still a great player as shown this season (just cant lead the knicks anywhere), whereas mutombo has been relegated to backing up jason collins...

not that i would mind it, that trade would make the nets awesome. a real shooter a dependable scorer which they desperately need, cause we all know wut happens if kidd has a bad day...

edit: wut lifer said lol...

that would be the DUMBEST trade EVER for the knicks.

knicks have made a LOT of bad trades and signings over the last 5 years. at least this one has the merit of having an end in sight.

mutombo is relegated to collins backup because of the style of play in NJ. in NY he would be a valuable contributer. not with points soo much, they have thomas and Spree to do the scoring, but as a defensive presence.

Um Mutombo = big bag of nothing

At least Houston is relatively young, the Knicks would be fools to make that trade.

don't think mutombo has a lot of productive years left in him....don't think the knicks will do it..but u never knw man..w/ a bunch of bad/dumb moves the knicks did in the past couple yrs..u just never knw man..

Well, I fired-up NBA Live 2003 and started a new franchise to give it a try, as the Knicks, starting this past season. The Nets wouldn't do it straight-up, but I managed a four-player deal. The Knicks sent Houston and Harrington for Mutombo and Harris.

That's not a bad trade at all, I think. Harris is your reliable back-up SG, Sprewell moves over to starter, Thomas moves to PF. I guess Anderson could start at SF, but they might need to pick-up another SF to make it work. For the Nets, they get the scoring they need, they've moved a guy who won't play much, and they picked-up a solid back-up big man to fill the hole in the roster. Now Kittles is the back-up SG.

Well from what I read, Knicks management basically threw all that money at Houston, and he'd have been a fool not to accept. It wasn't like Houston was demanding X dollars to stay in NY. So yeah, while everyone but Knicks management calls it a waste of money, if they wanna pay the guy that much, then they surely must think he's worth it, since he's performing about as well as would be expected of him.

BTW, Mike and the Mad Dog (THE sports radio show in NYC) just had a guy call in the same trade. They laughed at him, as they are apt to do pretty often to anything they haven't thought of themselves. They wouldn't even listen to the reasoning. Oy!

mutombo's offensive is so hideous it doesnt matter wut team he's on. yes he would bring size (which knicks need bad) but he's nowhere near his former self. besides, the knicks do a great job at bringing their opponents down to their ugly offensive levels. thats why the usually keep all games close, be it the spurs or the cavs, and then blow it in the fourth quarter.

i swear the knicks look like they never practice in between games. they miss bounce passes!!

Houston has a $100M contract. That would mean the Nets would lose Mutombo AND Kidd.

Kidd is probably going to the Spurs anyway

The Knicks would have to throw in Sprewell as well if they want to stay consistent with the rest of their trades.

Houston and Mutombo are both overpaid players who do mimimal for both teams.

Mutombo over paid and does minimal? YES.

Houston over paid? YES.
Does minimal? NO.

Houston is in the prime of his career and easily one of the top 5 shooting guards in the league (among Kobe, AI, Pierce, Ray Allen, maybe Stackhouse).
He is an offensive threat (2 50+ games last season), and quite possibly the only true scorer on the team, and is the defensive focus for the opposition.
He just came off his best year and has added more offensive moves to his arsenal.

I wouldn't call that minimal contribution to his team.
His defense and finishing near the basket (most notably lay ups) needs work though.

Well obviously the Nets don't know how to utilize big men, the Knicks would probably be a little better at that, so perhaps that trade would be good for both teams.

Sorry, i'm just still a little worked up at how stupid Scott is for overlooking Mutumbo for so long
