well, what kind of car are you looking for?

truck/sedan/SUV/compact?
powerful engine?
automatic or stick shift?
power windows, locks, keyless entry, etc or just a basic model?
gas efficient?
lots of cargo space?
reliable?

My general guidelines are:

[*]Sedan
[*]Automatic
[*]Power locks and windows
[*]High MPG (30+ on highway, high 20s in city)
[*]Under 100k miles

Preferably a model from 2000 or later.

yep a few sensors like to go out esp on the older ones, but there often cheap to replace, and you can often replace them yourself for very low cost

he will get his gas money back in the long run

Not too much of an issue....I'm just looking for a good deal. 🙂

LOL, so you're still brainwashed to pay a premium for a "new" car... only to have it depreciate 20-40% the second you drive it off the lot? Good luck with that!

First off, 20-40% my ass.

Second, I don't care about how much a car depreciates when I drive it off the lot. I usually keep my car for a full year before I sell it.

well, it must be an issue if you're looking at used cars. i mean, what's the ballpark? $5-10k? $10 - 20k? etc?

More in the 5-10k range.

You're missing my point... let some other fool buy the car, take the depreciation hit, and buy it when he trades it in after driving it for only a year for a nice discount.

If you're BUYING a car with the intention of only keeping it for a year or so, you should investigate leasing.

I bought an '06 Civic EX coupe in July, USED with right at 3,000 miles on it. Some fool had driven it for 3 months, then traded it in on an SUV. In my area, this model of car was going for more than sticker (because of the high MPG), if you could even find one.

I paid $2,000 less than sticker, and laughed all the way to the bank with my USED car.

I encourage the OP to wait for the right deal.

If your going to pay more than $9k, why not buy the great Honda Fit? You'll get tremendous gas mileage, a quick sporty car with lots of utility and fold down seats. But I think that the Civic is a great buy, especially for a good handling and for gas mileage.

well, that's very important to know 🙂

in this price range, go for a honda civic or toyota corolla. you can't beat those cars in reliability, they get terrific gas mileage, don't cost much and aren't terrible to drive. you could probably get a real nice ~2002 civic with < 60k miles for ~$8k and that car will run for another 100k miles easy.

craigslist has tons of car listings, but make sure to read the guide i posted before and ALWAYS run a carfax report before buying.

good luck.
