I got mine for the first time since early childhood this year...only because I was already at the doctor's getting my typhoid and hepatitis shots for my trip to India. Two days after I got the shot, I got the flu!! Its really bad in NC this year...

The shot probably works...but within a few days of vaccination infection is still possible.

I love the myths surrounding flu shots.

Folks, it is impossible to get the flu FROM the flu shot.

Are you sure about that? I had thought that getting a flu shot basically was injecting yourself with various bugs, but ones that were basically dead and just made your immune system build up anit-bodies to them. Is that incorrect?

In any case, I get sick so rarely, I would much rather risk getting the flu than have someone poke me with a needle to inject stuff in me.

Yes, it is DEAD virus that is being injected. A DEAD virus cannot make you ill. It only triggers an immune response.

It is impossible to get the flu from a flu shot.

If the virii that are injected aren't all dead, wouldn't it be possible then to contract it from the shot? Maybe the reason people get the flu so soon after the shot is because their immune system is weakened by building up antibodies to the shot?

Never had one. Got the flu twice in one year. 103 degree fevers each time.... But the stress in my life brought my immune system down and I blame that... So from them on, I keep the stress level low through exercise and sleep, and I haven't gotten the flu.

I never get one, but I got the flu this year.

But I haven't gotten the flu before that since I was in elementary school (over 10 years).

I don't think the vaccine has virii that are alive. The flu shot injected into your system triggers your immune system to react and sometimes because of that, your body will develop the symtoms of a flu.

What are the risks from getting a flu shot?

The viruses in the flu shot are killed (inactivated), so you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. The risk of a flu shot causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small. However, a vaccine, like any medicine, may rarely cause serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. Almost all people who get influenza vaccine have no serious problems from it.

some are born w/resistance to the flu. they can hug/kiss someone w/the flu and not get sick :)

My GF gets sick a lot more. Mostly colds though. I kiss her and everything else. Nothing has happened... yet.

It's an urban legend that you can GET the flu from a flu shot.

HOWEVER

You can get flu-like symptoms from the shot. That's what I got. To me there's no difference since it friggin FEELS the same. :|

I just know that the 4 years I've had a flu shot, I got flu-like symptons. Last year I said no to it and didn't get anything. This year will be the same.

You should always get your flu shot, because even if you don't become seriously ill from the flu, you can always pass it on to someone that may die from it. The kids that are dying in Colorado might have contracted the virus from someone who was carrying the virus but may not have had any severe symptoms.

What the heck are you smoking. Whether you get the flu shot or not, you can still pass the flu onto someone. Getting the flu shot does not mean that you can't spread the virus.

I didn't say I got the flu from the flu shot. Just that I feel like crap after I get one ... bad enough to go home and sleep it off (only sick time I took in 4 years in the service). I guess flu-like symptoms like somebody said below would describe it. Happened 4 years straight while I was in the Air Force (and required to get it), so I don't think it was coincidence.

I've had the flu, and it's definitely worse then what I get from the shots, but I've only gotten the flu once, so I'll take those odds for now.

I'm convinced that the Flu shot is slowly causing super flu viruses to develop. I'm 100% against this. I can see how it would be good for old people, since the flu could quite possibly kill them, and they won't be around for any super flu. Any other healthy person, just suck it up and get the flu. Then we won't have the super-flu virus in 30 years.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there's a difference between a vaccination and antibiotics.

Antibiotics are the ones that will produce the super bacteria, and it only produces them because the antibiotics used killed the vulnerable bacteria, leaving the ones with resistance to live and spread.

A vaccine just invokes an immune response, which would've happened if you had gotten the real virus, except the vaccine can't kill you.

If you don't contract the virus, you're not going to spread it. The virus wouldn't be able to multiply in your body and spread to other people if you are immune. Ergo, the need to be vaccinated.

And what ever virii survive your immune response are super virii.

People get who get flu shots too late in flu season can very easily come down with the flu days after the shot because they were infected BEFORE the body had a chance to build up an effective defense against the flu.

THIS is where the myth of "the flu shot gives you the flu" comes from.

Now, the immune response triggered by the flu vaccine CAN give some mild "flu like" symptoms, but that is not the flu.

Antibiotics are for bacterial infections. Think of them as Lysol for your body. They are ineffective and utterly useless for viral infections.

Yes, that is the case. More often, it is a case of someone not finishing their full course of antibotics, thus not killing all the bacteria and the ones that survive are stronger each time this is done. It doesn't happen in a single case. It is a process in which many people who make the same mistakes are infecting each other.

A vaccine just invokes an immune response, which would've happened if you had gotten the real virus, except the vaccine can't kill you.

Correct. Vaccines are our only defense against viral infection.

This year is a bad year for the flu. There are two strains that are running rampant in several states in the US, and then the rest of the world. The flu shot in the US only protects against on of the strains running rampant. The strain it doesnt protect against is MUCH worse. Even if you get a flu shot that second strain is going to knock you one your ass for a week or more.
