What do you think of people who block merge lanes

I've witnessed this several times going to and from work.
There are 2 lanes. One lane ends and you would have to merge into the other lane.
Of course people will drive in the lane that ends all the way up to the point where they have to merge.
To prevent this I've seen people who block the merge lane with their cars, driviving halfway in between lanes, preventing anyone from passsing.

To me, this accomplishes nothing except to piss people off. This brings traffic to a cpmplete stop rather than letting everyone accelerate to a safe speed and easily merge.
You are NOT a traffic cop. What gives you the right to do this? You should get ticketed for being an ass and not driving in your own lane.

What do you think?

It's just counter-jerk tactics. I don't do it myself, but I'd say they actually IMPROVE the flow of traffic (at least non-jerk traffic), since they're keeping people from zooming by the line of cars and cutting in front, forcing everyone to brake suddenly, which REALLY slows stuff down.

When I drive (or walk), it's ALL about the flow of traffic. The shorter the gap I'm merging into, the faster I go to get up to speed...if I see people slowing down ahead, I back off the throttle and usually they start moving again before I come to a full stop...if I'm walking down the street and there's a four-way stop, I will often cross BEHIND the car in front, just so I don't make them wait a needless half-minute for me.

I do it all the time. It is a matter of courtesy for all the other drivers.

trucks do it as as well.

What pisses me off is when people are merging and someone decides that instead of merging like everyone else, they're going to drive on the shoulder and try to bypass everyone. All that ends up doing is slowing down traffic even more, cause then the person that they try to cut in front of has to slow down, along with everyone behind them. (And then you get other people following on the shoulder)

I witness what I described every day on the way home from work.

Edit: Like Jagec said, straddling both lanes is a counter-jerk tactic.

I drive like an asshole because I was forced to adapt to external stressors in my environment.

That's the thing. I'm not asking you to do it for me. If I wanted the lan blocked, I would have done it myself. I don't need your help...But I don't do it because it think it's a jerk move.
A driver in front of me slid over to the right to block the merge lane. I went around him.

People who try to race by me just to merge in front of me instead of behind me get on my nerves.

yeah, but it is for the greater good. So individual wants/needs have to take a back seat for traffic to move smoothly.

I've seen truckers literally force people off the road for pulling that crap (passing on the right and not merging properly)

Ok, he's doing it for himself then. I hate when people know the lane ends but try and go all the way up anyway. They should wait in line like everyone else.

I jsut go around them if there's still along way to the merge point. Assuming there's a shoulder.

If traffic enginners were asshole merge lane blockers they would have designed it like this:
___
.......l______
___________

instead of this:
___
.......\_____
__________

The idea is to prevent a-holes like you from flying down the lane at 50 mph while everyone is crawling at 3mph. Then you fvckers pile up at the end where it gets narrow then jack the lane to the left.

You bet your ass I fvcking block the merge lane towards the end--I also give the drivers behind me the one-fingered salute while they slam on their brakes.

Anyone who voted "love them", and was serious needs to be shot along with people who do this.

I hate when I'm trying to merge, and aholes get out of the normal travel lanes and into the merge lane because we are moving faster then they are. luckily sometimes down here they have a cop sit at the end of the merge lanes :)

What I hate are the off ramps that connects with an on ramp. Instead of actually getting off the freeway like it's intended people exit off, go straight so they can pass all the other cars and then merge back onto the freeway. This does nothing but slow traffic down even more cause all these cars that got off needs to get back in.

They should be given a ticket for wreckless driving for driving in between lanes and lane changing without a signal

Exactly, that's why I block the merge lane so it defeats the purpose of changing into this lane to zip past other people.

Traffic jams happen because there are more cars than there is available road; it's a fact of life. Yes we all want to get to where we're going quicker, but not at the expense of everyone else, so wait your turn.

And in this case, you have no choice but to wait like everyone else. Pissed off? Now you know how it feels to be in the slow lane.
