p4.1-6 williammette with fan $110
ecs sis 650 board matx onboard sound, lan, video $85
256mb samsung pc2100 $60

nec 12x10x32 $45
inwin 545 slim microatx case $40
pny gf4 mx440 $80

thats how much i paid for everything shipped ,most like the vid card, ram , hard drive, cdrw, and cpu from fs/ft, . i kinda cut corners on the cpu and hte vid card (didnt get a northwood or a gf3 ti200 which saved like $75 northwood was gonna be like $142 shipped , damn CA tax. oh well mobo cant o/c well anyways) but i thikn it'll last a while hopefully.

Should of really gotten the Northwood instead of the Willamette and the Mx version of GF4 is that hot.

All IMO.

Well, since you want opinions, here it goes.....

It looks like you went for a budget build. You would have been better off saving up some more cash instead of letting it burn a hole in your pocket. For roughly 40.00 more you could have purchased the northwood, and a 7200 rpm HDD. I would rather have a GF2 Pro over the GF4 MX series.

IMHO For a budget-style system I would have gone with an AthlonXP 1600+, which can kick the 1.6 Willamette's a$$. And maybe ECS k7s5a mobo. Other than that it looks nice.

I'll agree on the Athlon XP over the Willamette, didn't even think about that. Plus price difference is not much different from NewEgg.

I do prefer AMD but I am amazed at the prices you received. Nice job and nowadays all the machines have more than enough power so congrats on a great system.
😀

I second the Athlon XP notion, I doubt it would've been any more expensive. You could've picked up a K7S5A mobo, and an XP 1800+ for same price,

To be frank, I think the biggest mistake you made was getting a 5400RPM HD. I assume your previosu system was a 5400RPM drive correct? Let me just tell you. There is a huge difference between a 7200 and 5400RPM drive. I have to computers side by side, roughly equal in componets more or less, except ones got an old 5400RPM drive the other a 7200 and I can not tell you the difference. As a matter of fact, I recently picked up a 7200RPM drive for the slower one because the speed loss was so noticeable. I think the best option you had to stay in your budget would have been to either use the On-Board video and get a NW+ the 7200RPM drive, or simply get a Radeon 32 DDR, it's only $39 at Newegg and will provide performance not terribly hot, but it'll definately last longer than the On-Board video.

To sum up, I doubt unless this is a strictly Gaming system (which is less sensative to HD speeds in actual game play), I doubt that it will feel any faster than your previous system. I'm thinking you had something like a P3 or P2 450 with at best 5400RPM HD, 128MB of RAM and something like a TNT2 right? Only in games really will this system feel a ton faster. That's just MHO

my previous system was the laptop in the sig. last june i had a

athlon 1 ghz tbird
kt133 chipset microatx
256mb pc133 crucial cl2
15 gig ibm 75gxp
ati radeon 32mb (LE flashed to standard)
27 gig maxtor secondary drive
5x dvd, 8x cdrw
sb live value
inwin v500

now i had to sell that one to a friend for $750 or so due to needing money

this one cost like $250+ less i really had to keep it under $500 for now i guess, its probably and hopefully is a little faster i'm figuring and i really dont use that much space on my hard drives. I guess the gf4 mx isnt the greatest card but for $80 well i dont think i can beat it its not THAT much slower than a ti200 i think from what i've seen in benchmarks. i guess this new system is just for office stuff and web and occasional warcraft 3 or some other game. saved money on the williamette by getting a used one i figured i'm not gonna o/c it so it wanst that big a deal ,but if ihad to buy that from newegg no way i'd have gotten the williamette i think the nw costs the same or even less than.

Your 1Ghz Athlon was probably just as fast as that 1.6 Willamette.

Next time, ask this question before you buy

Epox 8kha+ $89
Athlon XP 1700+ $102

Would kick the 1.6 Willamettes *ss

I do agree hat the GF4MX isn't as bad as people make it out to be (although I agree with John on taking a GF2 Ti rather than it), but again, I cannot stress the importance of a 7200RPM drive. But it sounds like that you just didn't want to wait and couldn't spend any more money that yhou did, so was it a good buy for the circumstances? Yes. I would've gotten a Radeon DDR and a 7200RPM HD instead of a GF4 MX 440 and 5400RPM, but that was your choice.

you should of asked your question before buying....

AMD 1.4 would kick the crap out of your processor for much less dollars.......
