If someone really wants, I can post my paper.... I was just curious about what you thought of it.

For the most part bad, but for now its what we have to work with. Racism isn't a problem that can be done away with wishful thinking, unfortunately, although affirmitive action is (thankfully) becoming an outdated policy. I can't wait to see it gone, but I understand its reasons for being there.

I think I'm doing a project on it right now. And I think to leave only "yes" and "no" as possible answers is ridiculous.

Simple: racial preference of any kind is wrong and goes against the 14th Amendment.

It doesn't bother me, because I know that as a white male, I'm still at an advantage. That's unfortunate, but it's true.

I think it was good for a while. Perhaps its need is diminishing as upward mobility becomes easier for minorities. I think the Supreme Court will probably overturn it in the next 10 years.

However, the equally discriminatory policy of legacy admissions will probably continue indefinitely

There is no law concerning legacy admissions so it is not equally discriminatory.

Last time I checked, giving different unequal treatment to someone because of their race was called discrimination....

End of story.

ohh shiznit.

obviously I don't need to point out that unequal treatment based on relations to alumni, or financial need, or apptitude, are all forms of "discrimination".

Yes, unfortunately, the law reads that you shall not discriminate based on race, sex, age, or religion. Doesn't say anything about the other stuff.

you can get rid of affirmative action, but you can't get rid of racism, prejudice, and discrimination.

that's true. I was simply pointing out that all too often people say "OMG it's called discrimination", as though the act of discrimination is so unnatural. The michigan case has further demonstrated that the SC believes that while overt acts of racial discrimination (quotas) are unconstitutional, more maleable methods of considering race (defacto discrimination), in light of a valid goal (diversity), is constitutional.

I don't think things are really cut and dry when we're dealing with a fairly liberal interpretation of the function of the judicial branch and constitutional "intent".

Premise 1: All races are created equal.

Premise 2: If all races are created equal, then (all else equal) the proportion of each race in a e.g. a university should be roughly equal to their proportion with respect to the general popultion. I.e. if 10% of population is Latino, 10% of university should be Latino.

Premise 3: The minority representation in universities comes nowhere close to their representation in the general population.

Conclusion: ?

(all races not created equal? discrimination is a problem and we need affirmative action?)

if the premises are true, and the argument is valid, then the conclusion must be true.....
