My neighbor (live kitty corner accross the street, two houses in) has a German Shepard. They let this dog out and the dog does nothing but bark. I mean from 3pm to 11pm, constant barking. The dog barks so loud that I can hear him over my surround sound Tv! Some of the other neighbors have talked to him and he just blows them off. I am a neighborhood assistance officer (volunteer), I patrol the city, do house checks, work parades, just show a presence. My neighbors complain to me about this dog, so I call the PD. They go to his house and talk to him about it. The barking doesnt stop, day after day. I call animal control, they go talk to him and warn him about his dog.
Last Saturday there is a knock at my door, its the neighbor guy. Starts yelling at me about calling the PD on his dog swearing its not his dog that is barking. Then he starts in about "being a man, and coming over and talk to him about his dog instead of calling the police." He then asks me to step outside and we will take care of this problem right now. I am 6' 4" and 350lbs, trained in all kinds of self defense and pain compliance (ex prison guard). So obviously this guy isnt to smart. I am recovering from surgery or I would have stepped out the door and rammed his head through the neighbors wall. I told him to leave my property or I would help him, and if I did, the gate wouldnt be openned on his way out.
Since then, his dog hasnt been barking any more. Until yesterday, 4pm to 830pm last night. I dont know, call the PD again you think?
Oh yah, he tells me, "be man enough to come over and tell me that my dog is barking instead of calling the PD." I said, "So, I should get dressed in my winter clothing, walk the half a block to your house and tell you that your dog is barking, 8 feet from where you are sitting? I can see you watching tv through your sliding glass doors! get the f*** out of here."
What do you guys think? How would you handle it?

Why go over there and risk a confrontation? You can respect his wishes with a phone call just as easily. Explain to him that neighbors have been complaining to you, your position in the neighborhood (if he doesn't know it already), and what you intend to do about it if the noise isn't stopped. Heck if you want, you can get the neighbors to sign a petition and deliver it to him to get him to quiet his dog. That ought to show him just how many people it bothers.

If the dog is barking after 10pm or so, i would call the cops. Shouldn't that be considered disturbing the peace or noise pollution? I know most neighborhoods have laws against loud music and stuff after 10pm... this should fall under that category.

If you can... videotape it.... so you have evidence.

That's just a sucky situation. Problem is in this situation the jerk usually wins, because he just doesn't care.

I can't believe he can sit and watch tv while a dog is barking like that. I would say call the police.

I really hate people with barking dogs. 9 times out of 10 the dog just wants some attention and the
owner is just too lazy to give it to him.

I would tape the barking for evidence. If the barking is as long as you state, then there is something seriously wrong with the dog; perhaps abused by the owner. I don't know where you are, but around here, cruelty to animal laws are strictly enforced with prison sentences handed out all the time.

Many cities have loud dog laws. Here, they allow 3 complaints and then a written ticket is issued. Get the people on the block together on this then go over and explain to him that further continued barking will result in a coordinated effort by the families on the street to put a final end to it via mass complaints. Don't say mass complaints to him but that is what needs to happen if you want peace and quiet.

I was able to convince my neighbor across the street that if he pulls up to his house one more time with the bass blasting on his car stereo (which disturbed everyone on the street) the entire street would complain. He shuts it down now about 500' away!

Call the cops. If you go over to his house and knock on his door then you're on his turf - not a good position to be in no matter how big you are given how many of the idiots in the world own guns.

Perhaps one of these would do the trick. On him, not the dog, since the dog doesn't really know any better.

<< "Accidentally" shoot the dog while testing out your firearms. :Q:eek: >>

That woudn't solve the problem. You can't blame a dog for being a dog. If the dog were killed, the owner would get another one, an innocent dog would be dead, and the neighborhood would be back to square one.

Write a note that says "Tell the dog to STFU"
Tie the note to a brick.
Throw the brick through his livingroom window.

hehe
(don't really do that)

I did write a letter to him, telling him how the neighborhood feels, I had the neighbors sign it also. That didnt help either. I told him, give me your phone number and I will call you when your dog is barking for hours on end! He said "Im not giving you my f-ing phone number!" I guess that borrowing a video camera would be a good thing to do. I told him, I dont care if you have 25 dogs, as long as they dont affect my life. I have a dog, I asked him, "do you ever hear my dog barking?" His answer was no, because I dont allow my dog to bark.
It is not the dogs fault, its his. He could get a bark collar, or an electronic training collar and stop this problem in days! Or give the dog something to do out in the yard, he just paces the fence line barking. Reminds me of a lion in a cage at the zoo.

It sounds to me that you've done everything and then some. To knock on his door would surely risk confrontation (this guy seems to have a chip on his shoulder). I'd call the police and let them handle it.

throw some poisoned meat in his yard. I know though its not the dogs fault, the owner could restrain it. There are always options for a lawsuit if the barking violates some sort of local ordinance.

I've got a similar problem with a neighbor. Thier dog runs rampant and is constantly getting into our garbage and chasing our new puppy around. THe neighbors wont do jack so I called the sheriff. Basically he gave me the green light to kill the dog and said I would not get in trouble. Its not really the dogs fault, but the owner won't do anything. So there is my dilemma as well.

you can't do this by yourself.....do you have a city council or anything you can complain to? Try to get some of your other neighbors to call the police as well....if they get enough calls they will want it to stop!

hire a hitman/sniper to off the guy. if you get rid of him, the dog goes away too.

but seriously i have the same problem with the neighbors right behind us. it's only when they leave and the put the dog in the backyard. stupid owners.

Don't go to his house...this guy's obviously prone to violence. I'd just keep calling the cops. Hellz...I'd just the call the cops each and every time the dog opened his mouth. And call the SPCA and tell them you think the dog might be abused.

I'd simply make it clear to this guy that I'm going to be a thorn in his side until he removes the thorn from mine. After all--you're perfectly within your rights to call and report him every 2 minutes, to report the behavior to an animal control center b/c I've never seen a well-treated dog bark constantly...you're within your rights to file a complaint with the city council, homeowners ass'n and whoever else. Heck, you could even file a civil suit against him seeking punitive damages.
This guy thinks he can resolve his issues by simply beating down whoever stands in his way. And quite frankly, if he showed up at my door again, I'd let him have the first punch and then I'd press assault/battery charges on him. He'll be a real tough guy when he's in jail and bubba makes him bark like a dog...

Go over to his hous after dark, when he's not paying attention, and let the dog out on the street. Then cal animal control to pick up the stray dog.
