But even if so, I don't understand why people connect rigid natural laws with the lack of free will. Suppose there were no rigid laws and everything happened randomly. How does this randomness suddenly mean we have free will? In fact, it seems on the face of it that if everything were random we would have less free will. After all, we would have no control over anything - it's all random.

There may not necessarily be a connection between free will and natural laws.

Exactly, so no matter what, free will is only an illusion.

But does free will need to be mutually exclusive from natural laws? Who is to say that our consciousness does not allow us to make choices and that those natural laws get adjusted at the gate where the choices exist.

IE:
natural laws gets to "area"

Choice 1 - stimulate "area" this way
Choice 2 - stimulate "area" other way

natural law leaves "area" and continues on its merry way.

There is no purpose to life. It just is.

What you do with life depends on you.

another one to think about:

let's assume evolution is true. (okok i knw most of you believe in it, but you have to admit there are some holes, but no other theory comes close to our creation other than evolution given the facts and evidence, hehehe). If that's the case, then our brain's premise and design was to ADAPT and SURVIVE our surruoundings, and never to understand our surroundings. We can never view our own world from outside or our own eyes. Our eyes and brain plays tricks and we are easily decieved by the easiest of illusions.

That said, how can we ask ourselves the meaning of life and how can we even attempt to truely understand everything about our surroundings? Our understanding of the world as we understand it now is probably flawed due to our own brain's initial design. We weren't biult for understanding. We were biult for survival and procreation. It is only the outer layer of our brains that has logic, but the inner layers are all about survival(i think? hehehe you brain dudes can correct me if i'm wrong), and those inner layers are our foundation. Now with that, if God DOES exist, how can we ever even understand him or creation or evolution when we weren't designed for understanding in the first place...

heheheh k. I suck at philosophy and that was just something I thought up of a couple yrs ago, so take it as is and post on i guess...It makes for a great ice breaker convo among other dudes whenever I take psych classes for a break from my ee classes.

First off, yes there are some questions and holes about aspects at the finest details of evolution but evolution is a fact and it cannot be denied.

Here is a good link: http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/gould_fact-and-theory.html

To continue, the whole purpose of evolution is to allow species to adapt to their environment as best as possible to ensure the continuation of the species. Humans evolved no differently than any other species. Our brains evolved and as a result allowed us to manipulate our environment. It allowed us to question how we could make the best out of any number of conditions or situations. It gives us the ability to question things such as the future and consequences of actions. Humans evolved an ability to question and understand the world around them.
