What do you think is the best motherboard?

I want the most stable motherboard for my new system.
I want DDR memory and an AMD XP procesor. I mainly use it for gaming.
And also what's the diferance in AMD XP and AMD MP, and which one's better?
Thanks

Seeing as how you are going to have to buy some new memory in addition to the board, it's going to cost you over $150. For that kind of money, you can get a Radeon 8500 or GF3 Ti200. Since you already have an A7V133 (Performs quite well) with 512MB of Crucial memory, I doubt you will gain any serious performance by going DDR. The 3D Prophet 2 Ultra to Ti200 upgrade will give you much more of a benefit. Of course, you probably won't take my advice. If you don't, I would suggest the Shuttle AK31A, EPoX 8KHA+, or Soltek SL-75DRV2. They are all stable and fast. For overclocking, I would choose between the EPoX and Soltek boards. For light overclocking or no overclocking, go for the Shuttle.

The only difference is the MP is tested to work in SMP configurations and the XP is not. However, a good number of XP's seem to work in dual CPU configurations anyway. There are no performance or architectural differences between the two.

The ABIT KR7A Raid is probably the best board out if your into big time overclocking, but you lose some features to other boards, like built in sound (of ANY kind, let alone 6.1) and ethernet.

I think the Soyo K7V Dragon+ is an excellent board in the features department with everything and the kitchen sink built in, and ive heard good things about the MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU with its built in USB2.0.

But for straight stability/speed/features, I think its hard to beat the Asus A7V266-E.

Keep in mind that all of the boards listed here are pretty damn expensive. If you want excellent price/performance, i suggest the Epox EPOX EP-8KHA+.

Good Luck!

The newer SMP motherboards won't run duel XP. I think the origiginal Tyan Dual board could run duel XPs... correct me if I'm wrong.

It's rumored that AMD asked Motherboard manufactuers to eliminate the option of running XP's on 760MPX boards, but from my understanding the Asus board will still run dual XP's

The only actual differences in the CPU's is that the MP has unlocked L1 bridges & has a different CPU ID string "Athlon MP" vs. "Athlon XP" - it is this string that the motherboard is supposed to check before allowing the 760MPX to run dual CPU's.

The best bang-for-the-buck Athlon board right now is the Epox EP-8KHA+. Excellent board for a little over $100. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that more expensive boards have, but it gets down and dirty for performance at a good price. If you don't mind spending the extra cash (perhaps you want RAID and advanced overclocking features), the Abit KR7-RAID is hard to beat.

I know I wouldn't gane a lot going to ddr memory, but from a thunderbird 1333 to an xp 1600 I will have a big speed differance.

<< Wow abit + stable in the same post? Is such a thing possible? >>

actually, i find abit boards are really solid.
