What do you think is likely to be 2011's biggest gadget or tech release
and please say why.

ipad 2 or one of the new, real android tablets. Ipads 2 because the original is a huge success and I think is actually outselling Mac computers, and a new, real android tablet because of how awesome the specs and capabilities will be(but Im sure the prices will be fail city)

A new iPad.
Android phones and tablets that kick ass.
Hyopthetically a webOS tablet that works well or a Nokia with Android.
Maybe a huge improvement to WinPhone 7 along with kickass hardware.

Just like the movies, the biggest release will probably be just another version of something we already have. Yay.

We already had this conversation in the movie thread. American corporations have completely run out of original ideas.
The pad is not new. Its simply a refinement of the tablet laptop. Take away the keyboard, limit processing power to save battery, strip down the OS or make a new efficient one just for mobile use, BAM! You got your iPad. And Android follows suit the next fiscal cycle.
WM7 will be next.

Rather than come up with something newer and better, Blackberry follows suit with touchscreen devices. Palm makes their version of the Tablet. No original ideas, just ultra-refined old ideas. And LOTS of law suits, cuz we all know the real way to make money is to dig in someone elses deep pockets.

Sales wise, iPhone 5. Impact wise I think it's going to be Android tablets. Hopefully competition will bring prices down and you can get a serviceable tablet for $300.

If they had kept the rumored pricing, sure. But as it stands now, not so much. Maybe if Google went and standardized the docking feature?

If the rumors about Nokia moving from Meego to Windows Phone are true, I think there's a lot of potential there for a big release. An N8 successor with WP7.5 would be quite competitive - the N8 itself only fell short due to a lack of subsidies and poor software.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 5 are destined to be big no matter what; my suspicion is that the iPad 2 will get some sort of native 1080p output capability to function like a computer, like the Atrix.

iPhone 5. Book it. I didn't think iPhone hype with the iP4 would get this big, but the 3GS => iP4 jump was huge in terms of the lines and all. I lined up for both devices, although I didn't do launch day for 3GS, I did the weekend (2 days after), and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the lines for the iPhone 4 after 1 month still.

So yeah. I think this iPhone 5 mania will continue to explode. ESPECIALLY if it's a dual carrier launch.

Windows 7 Phone Tablet would be interesting.

I have been wondering what MS has planed for software considering it sounds like Windows 8/Windows Next (or whatever they call end up calling it) might be their Cloud OS.

I think that the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 will get all of the press coverage, but I think that all the new Android 3.0 tablets in the $300 price range will be the hot items this Christmas.

I'm thinking iPad 2 or iPhone 5.

No need to really think about this one. These are always going to be guaranteed to be big deals. The only things to think about is what else would be big gadgets. We have many things that look cool but nothing yet has come out to show any good competition to the iPad.

Noone have said it but I hope its honeycomb on smartphone.
Or at least some kind of Android update that will utilize graphic acceleration.
I don't think it matters how fast the SoC gets, without graphic acceleration, the UI will never be as smooth as iOS.

Of course it would be just as smooth as iOS without GPU acceleration. CPU technology would progress to be fast enough to handle it but that obviously wouldn't happen any time soon so we need GPU acceleration now.

It'll be zero because there will not be an LTE iPhone 5. Apple always waits until a new tech has settled before jumping in. They will do like they did with 3G and wait. Neither company has a large LTE footprint yet.
