whoa i'm confused here. i'm in a similar situation and i have my own room, and the other two people share the other room. this is in a 2 bedroom apartment. our rent is $1390 per month, and i pay half and they split the other half. since i don't have a roomate, is this fair? i assumed at the time that since i don't have a roomate that this is fair, but now you guys are all saying i shouldn't be paying more than a 1/3 even though i don't have a roomate? should i demand to pay less?

if both of your rooms are equal size / bath, then yes you should be paying the same as what they pay combined.

man i never really thought about that before, because yea we all do share the other rooms of the apartment. it's not fair that i pay double what they pay just because i don't have a roomate. and my bedroom is smaller too. i'm gonna demand to pay less (don't worry my roomate is a softy).

So my cuzzin and her BF get the bigger room and i get the smaller room...how should we split this up?

$1000 for ME?
$1300 for My cuzzin and her BF?

what do you guys think is far?

Whatever you do, don't let them talk you into paying more than 1/3 of the rent. That would be big BS.

why would it be big BS? or how?

They are probably trying to talk him into paying a bigger chunk of the rent for some BS reason. I have been dicked over by friends and family before and I just don't want it to happen to him.

$1000/$1300 or $900/$1400 (better) sounds fair, but make sure you pay less of the bills (like 1/3 of any bills TOPS, try for 1/4 or nothing at all)
You are having more than 1/3 of the house, so you should pay probably more than 1/3 of the rent, but you shouldn't pay too much on the bills.

actually my room is only slightly smaller than their room is, and i have way more space given that they are two people sharing that room. i think they just wanted to make the math easy, and i should have brought this up when we got the place. it's ok, i'll let it slide. $50 a month extra isn't going to kill me.

i just wish people out there weren't so goddamn stingy and money hungry. makes me sick sometimes.

Also everyone gets their own underground carport spot.

thats doesnt sound fair at all.,

I would say a fair split would be 3 ways.

well when you think about it, he gets his own room all to himself which he doesn't have to share. therefore he should be paying a little more for having a single all to himself. i think that makes a little sense, he does technically own more of the apt.

even 3 ways is fair or 1/2 and 1/2 and you get the bigger room and less on utilities. Make sure everyone is agree with the amounts before moving in.

BTW, OP, my mortgate is about 1/2 of your rent and it is 4 bedrooms with 2 baths and 1900 sq. feet. At least the South is good on something.

Your cost = 2300*(your room sqft)/(their room sqft*(2/3)) / # of people

Assume your room is 12x12 = 144 sqft
Assume their room is 12x18 = 216 sqft
Assume each of them as 1/3 of room to each self, and share the remaining 1/3,
adjusted area is 2/3* "their room sqft".

In this case, by my formula you would pay 1/3 of the rent if the room dimensions were the same as what I guessed. (766.67$)

You can see how this works out to your benefit if you have a dramatically smaller room.
If you had a 10x10 room, and they have a 12x18, you pay $532.41

If you have a 200sqft room and they share a 216sqft room, you have to pay $1064.81

That's a hoot. From the POV of the other guy, you're encroaching on THEIR space! Damn, the things people put up with to live in CA.

What boggles my mind is people who pay over $1k+ a month in rent, when you can get a mortgage (even with bad credit) and get a house...

Unless her b/friend is on the lease I'd say larger bedroom rent $1300, smaller bedroom $1,000 it's up to your cousin to set rent/collect from her b/friend.Trust me this prevents headaches.

Utlities/shared food etc split 3 ways

When you pay that much in rent you're not going to be able to afford a down payment plus payments on a house in that area.

I hope you all have good jobs. That would pretty much tap me out from buying any goodies. I'm still in college and only bring in about $1,400 to $1,600 a month but spending half on shelter would kill me.

You guys are forgetting to take into account the equal (3 way) sharing of the common area.

i agree to something like this except calculate the communal living space as well

if your room is 12 * 12 and theirs is 12 *20 and say you have 600 square feet of common area divide each persons usage by the total amount of square feet available and then that is the percent you pay in rent

12x12=144 + 200 (common area) 344/984

cousin = 120 + 200 = 340 / 984

cousin's bf = 120 +200 = 340 / 984

if you have your own bathroom and so do they than that counts toward your area

if they have a bathroom in their room and the other bathroom is not in your room than that bathroom counts as part of the common area
