This point is true. The G.I. in G.I. Joe meant government issue, but that is only because they were mistaken when naming him. G.I. does not mean government issue, except in the name G.I. Joe.
I don't think G.I. was ever changed from it's true meaning officially, however. The media and civilians just like to play it up, such as G.I. Joe.
