I just put together the following setup:

Pentium D 930
Asus P5DW2-E Premium
Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 DIMM Memory Kit
Antec Performance I P180 Silver
Thermaltake Big Typhoon
XFX 7900 GTX
Creative Lab X-Fi
2xWD Raptor 74Gb RAID
2xWD 16MB 250Gig extra storage
Antec 550watt NEO-HE
Apple 30" Cinema display

I don't overclock, no bling bling, no window, no lights,no water cooling, little gaming(oblivion), mostly autoCAD, video editting, surfing and movies.......

Give me your take on this. Thanks.

if i were to change your setup. i would go with the x1900xt or xtx for the nice aa/af and running hi res in that display. i would also get a scythe ninja for my cpu and if you feel that isn't enough u can add a nexus to it and it will definately be better than the big typhoon. if you wont be overclocking maybe you should just get ddr400 ram?

I thought about the x1900xtx but that thing is loud under full load.... plus at max resolution there is little difference. I choose ddr2 6400 in case I want to use it in 6 months or so for the next processor :)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Pentium D 930 - Go with AMD...Get cheaper RAM
Asus P5DW2-E Premium
Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 DIMM Memory Kit - Why are you getting PC26400 RAM??? for all the internet surfing?
Antec Performance I P180 Silver
Thermaltake Big Typhoon
XFX 7900 GTX - You are buying this card for one game??
Creative Lab X-Fi - What speakers do you have? Which version are you getting
2xWD Raptor 74Gb RAID - Don't raid, almost no performance difference. Two times the chance of failure...don't get the raptors
2xWD 16MB 250Gig extra storage - 500 Gigs should be enough no?
Antec 550watt NEO-HE - Get a Fortran/Seasonic mid 400's

thats how poor people like to express their feelings towards those with more money.
i can only wish i had that apple cinema display and you will be lucky to have it, but i dont think the 7900gtx will be able to play games at that resolution.. consider sli or x1900xtx or xt crossfire.. seriously. but then again you dont really game so its up to you. the xt(x) series is not loud at load. you will barely hear it over your psu and 3 x 120mm fans and big typhoon in your case. i feared the same thing before getting mine and it is as quiet as 2 x adda 120mm fans at 1500rpm

exxxxxcussse me for trying to help the guy save money. I just don't see the big point of buying a 30" display...for gaming you will almost certainly have to run it at lower resolutions...for autocad...well...you don't need THAT much room.

Because he gets the 30" display he is forced to buy a rediculous graphics card for the amount of gaming he does.

Raid has been proven to be ineffective for the most part. Raptors have been shown to be not much faster than the average hard drive nowadays.

Yeah, I think he asked to have his system critiqued, so the "poor people expressing their feelings to those with money" comment was a bit severe. I don't want to flame anyone, but DAMN that was harsh, hehe ;P

Ok, here's my 2cents. I'll agree with PurdueRy about RAID and the 30" display as far as gaming is concerned. For autocad... the more the merrier I guess. My only real recommendation would be to just go for a Pentium D 920. You're not going to notice much of a performance difference whatsoever over 200Mhz on an Intel system. Also, I know you already said you're not interested in overclocking, but it won't hurt to peak at some overclocking basics if you're interested in a free performance boost. The 920 will do 3.0ghz without so much as breathing heavy, especially on that board with that RAM. Many people have gotten their 920's to 3.6ghz on stock cooling quite easily, so I'd defo recommend looking into that. I don't do much overclocking myself as I build systems for stability and reliability, but it's hard to pass on that kind of free performance on a home system. Happy building :)

I'd be careful with an Asus board and a Antec Neo series PSU. The AMD nForce boards have had alot of problems with them, I'm not sure about the Intel chipset boards.

If your interested in upgrading to conroe, I'd wait to see which boards are compatible. I've heard reports that the P5DW2-WS is working because of the 8 phase power design, but I haven't heard of any other current 975 boards besides the newest revision of the Intel Bad Axe working with conroe. I'm hoping my gigabyte will work, but you never know.

Wrong..........

Get an AMD dual core CPU.
Buy corsair value select instead.
As for mobo - get a Epox 9npa+ultra. Its a really nice board.
You do NOT need the Big Typhoon (you arent overclocking - duh)
Im not a fan of antec PSU's - try Fortron?
You willl see little increase in performance for the dollar with your raptors.
Buy the Klipsch promedia 5.1 Ultra's for speakers (why have a high end sound card and not a high end sound system? lol)

And you are rich if you can afford a 30 inch monitor :(

Much appreciate everyone's comments.

I have been throne between AMD and Intel but I'm not a heavy gamer. In additional to the bad experience from former AMD chips, I choose to go with intel again....... I know a lot had change since but not being able to use DDR2 chips is another factor. I need something that is stable and reliable more than screaming fast with tons of fans blowing like a jet engine. the Intel 975X Chip seems fairly reliable and somewhat ready for the next intel chip (I know there is no such thing) but there is at least hope.....very slim chance. Buying 939 socket at this time doesn't make sense to me (this is my personal opinion, I'm not speaking for anyone else nor starting a flame war).

From what I have gather, Antec PSU isn't as good as they advertise? Fronton??? is more quiet and reliable?

The 30" is great for CAD, since I'm in front of the monitor for 8 to 10 hours a day might as well get something you really like. I've cover this in a previous post regarding LCD monitors. My budget could only get the apple 30" which I enjoy a lot.

I have a set of Klipsch Promedia 4.1 as computer speakers...they've been great. I'm not replacing these.

I picked the big typhoon b/c of the 16dB noise it creates..... is the scrythe ninja quieter?

This is my first upgrade in 3 years.....

Again Thanks for the comments.

Intel's current chips run hot, the 9XX range aren't as bad as the 8XX range, but they are still run hotter than 939 systems. You can cool Intel systems quietly, but it's harder than for AMD.

The scythe ninja can be quieter, i don't think it can handle a 930 passivly, if you want low noise then buy a Nexus (orange) 120mm fan and replace the one on the BT with it. Voila! Very, very quiet.
