MSI K7T Pro2a 190.00
256MB Majorbrand RAM 159.90
Midi Tower 125.20 (78.25$)

Cooler 12.00 (7.50$)
Logitech IFeel Mouse 60.00 (37.50$)
Keyboard 25.00 (15.60$)
Floppy 17.60 (11.00$)
SB Live Value 34.00 (21.25$)
ATI Radeon 32DDR Retail 305.80 (191.15$)
Tbird 1GHz 316.00 (197.50$)

Total Cost: 1766.87 CHF
Total Cost: 1104.30 $

1 Dollar is about 1.6 CHF. That are really the best prices I can get. My Bro' uses the computer primarly for gaming. He'll have a 17" Sony Trinitron Monitor, which can do 1024x768@85Hz, at 1280x1024, it can only do 75Hz, which is not acceptable for gaming IMHO. So he will playing games only at 1024x768. Is it worth for 30$ more to get the 64MB DDR Radeon? Which components are weak? What could I get better. The Limit is about 1200$.

Thanx for any help

[Edit]He'll be using Win98SE[/Edit]

Just my opinion...

DVD in a PC is a waste, just get a solid CDROM that is good at audio extraction.

Major brand (Crucial, Mushkin, etc) is a waste unless you plan on overclocking the FSB. You should not need this if you want to OC the Thunderbird.

Also, I would spend the money on the 64Mb video card. AGP texturing is not what it was intended to be and 64Mb of video RAM will nicely extend the useable 3D performance of the video card.

In my opinion, go OEM on the Radeon... You can get one for about 100 bucks american if you go OEM instead of retail. Anyways, even if you go retail, pricewatch.com lists a retail card for 160 american shipped. Oh, and don't skimp on the cooler. Go get a good Taisol.

I live in Switzerland, and the problem is, with all this shipping and stuff, it gets about the same price. I just use the normal Heatsink. It's a Pentalpha, which is nearly the same as the FOP32-1 I guess.

<< DVD in a PC is a waste >>

I'd stay with the DVD. More and more companies are using the DVD platform to release games and other software instead of having to use 6 CDs. Plus I do watch movies on my computer sometimes. But I don't see any speakers the stuff you're getting....

There's been a debate going on for a while over whether you actually get any more speed out of Major brand memory. I say go with the good stuff if you've got the money and you want stability.

Get some speakers too 🙂

Mem:
A 300 Watt PSU. I've built about 4 rigs.... on the first one, with the classic Athlon, I only had a 250W PSU, and the computer all ways rebooted and stuff. So from now on, everything under 300Watt is a no go 😉

Oops, well, the Monitor has some built-in speakers, so...... Well yeah, add another 50 smackaroos for speakers 😉 thanx

I would also stay with DVD,I`m always buying PC magazines & the amount of extra free stuff on the DVD giveway disc on the front cover is always worth it IMHO.

🙂

Yeah, those DVD software titles have been beating use down since I bought my drive two years ago. Hmm I think they said the same thing back then!?!

Good idea NOT to skimp on the RAM. Cheap RAM leads to more problems in my experience then almost anything else. Whenever someone says something like "it keeps locking up" that is the first place I look, and often times it's whats wrong. Make sure your HSF is Athlon approved (you may consider dumping a little more $$$ [or CH CH CH] on it. Good luck.

I dont think Mushkin is available there so you'd probably have to look for something else. The MSI K7T Turbo is already out, so you might want to get that one instead.

LXi:
I could order the Mushkin RAM online, but that's simply TOO expensive. If I get the MSI K7T Turbo, I also have to get DDR RAM, and I don't think that it's really necessary. But thanx anyway
