What do you think about nude bikes?

Potential first time rider wants:

-fun, comfortable, reliable bike for some city riding and cruising around the open freeway

Dont want:

-mega fast, mega-douche, super-sport crotch-rocket

Dont want to temp myself to kill myself... so no crazy 600/750cc bikes. A common starter bike is Ninja 250... but thats style SS-styled. Im interested in something more laid back like the Ducati Monster without ofcourse the Ducati price tag or power. Perhaps something 1/2liter. Should be fun to ride and mega-reliable.

Honda? Yamaha?

I think it would be mega-sweet. You should totally do it dude... it would be mega-awesome and you would score some mega-pussy.

Suzuki SV-650
Yamaha FZ-6
Buell Lightning XB9sx

I've been looking at all of these. Ninja 250 is gutless, I haven't had a whole lot of time riding... but it bores me.

Pick up a used Suzuki GS500. Perfect simple beginners bike. Enough power so that you don't have to thrash it to keep up with traffic, but not enough to get a newbie into serious trouble.

I agree, in your case you should probably go for the SV (you said you were new to bikes)

You could also add the Kawasaki Z750 and the Honda Hornet 600. However, I would work my way up slowly if you are new to motorbikes. Get a a Yamaha XT 650, it's mostly plastic and if you come off the parts are cheaper, you can sell it later to buy something else. Another alternative is the Suzuki GS 500 - small, not too fast, but a good introduction to bigger bikes. I'm not sure if all of these models are available to you, but you can google them and buy something similar.

Perhaps a 250? Learn to wallk before you run.

Stay clear of Ducati unless you are a mechanic: they are beautiful, but less reliable. I would also question the reliability of Buells.

 Very sound advice here.

By the way, this is the first time I've heard the expression "nude bikes", in Ireland and the UK, we refer to them as nakeds.

It sounds like you want a cruiser, so I'd recommend getting a cruiser. Several company's make them, find the one you like.
I won't bother with a recommendation because everyone here thinks you need to start out on a gutless clunker that you'll hate within a few months. I'd advise you to go to a motorcycle forum and see what they recommend.

No, we just don't want him/her to kill himself/herself. For a first bike, none of the recommendations are gutless, if you think otherwise, you are wrong.

The Suzuki SV650 is *exactly* what you're after. It's also super reliable and a whole lot of fun.

With that said, as a first bike a Ninja 250R is a great choice. A Buell Blast is a good choice for a first bike as well.

Agreed. And the SV650 is not just a beginners bike. Many people with decades of riding experience ride these machines because they are plenty fast, they have a great chassis, they are cheap and have a ton of aftermarket support, they are reliable, and they are a lot of fun to ride. A good rider can easily hang with super sports on twisty roads on this bike.

I bought one a little over a year ago and have close to 6,000 miles on it already. It is my second bike replacing an old Honda CB750 that I put thousands of miles on (I enjoyed the old Honda but it is no comparison to the SV-the SV is better in every possible respect).

Here is my SV

I like the Ducati Monster 1100 S quite a bit and did a test ride a few months ago. I absolutely loved it and would like to buy one in the next year or so. People rag on the Ducati saying that they are unreliable but I don't think that's true at all.

A friend of mine has a Ducati GT1000 Classic Sport that he bought new and it has been very reliable. They've been making variations on their L-Twin for decades, they are good engines and with the recent changes they are easier to work on and more reliable.

Ducatis do require a bit more maintenance and it is a bit more expensive if you take it to the dealer for that work than with other bikes but they are reliable if you keep up on the maintenance.

BTW-Check out SVRider.com. It's a great site with tons of support for SV owners.

Oh, and take the MSF course if you don't have your M1 endorsement.

Only the new 2008+ Ninja 250R is supersport-styled. Get a classic Ninja 250R instead. It's more of the bannana-seat single headlight "sport touring" look and hasn't changed in 20 years. Even so, you can outfit even the new Ninja 250R with all the hard cases and extended windscreens you want to make the most fuel-efficient touring bike around. That said, I was going to get a Buell Blast for the excellent fuel economy and non-aggressive looks, but it is a terrible commuter as far as wind and vibration comfort, way too expensive compared to the 250, and ABYSMAL resale value. I thought the 250 looked too aggessive too and I insisted on black ("stealths" the aggressive-looking fairing cuts) but I got stuck with blue and it has really grown on me. I crossed the country on it too. It's pretty much the only sport bike with an up-right seating position to suit that kind of riding.

Don't be turned off by the sportier crotch-rocket look. It's just a 250 and there are a ton of riders with similar intentions.

Here's my two-fiddy

step 1 - take a motorcycle safety course
step 2 - if, after the course, you find that a 250 has enough power, they're a great value motorcycle
step 3 - once you really learn how to ride and realize that the 250 is way underpowered, sell it (probably break even if you bought used), and buy a 600cc+ bike.

i wouldn't get a v-twin smaller than harley's 883. i wouldn't get an inline 4 smaller than 600.

my "starter" bike is a yamaha 1100. my next bike with be a 96ci harley softail

looks like the SV650 does 1/4mi in 12.00 seconds. that's ferrari territory. thats getting-into-trouble territory. maybe a bit overkill? ill be satisfied with 13.5 or 14 seconds (ie my car)
