So before I even got to college I contacted all my room mates and we decided to hook up our living room. We got our tv for $1050 (the stand was included). I brought a logitech Z-5500 system for our surround sound. We've got a modded xbox and xbox 360. The TV is a 50" panasonic.

Slightly better than the 19" TV/VCR combo that I had in college.

Not bad. Went with a Panny DLP myself. How do the Z-5500s sound in a room that size?

They sound amazing.. We turn it up 3/4's of the way playing Burnout Revenge with the subwoofer all the way up and it hurts my ears and puts you into the game really well. You just can't beat them for the price.

13" Magnavox Color (yes color) TV and parents old VCR from the late 80's (the gigantic kind) got me through most of college

If we had a windowless room I would consider getting a projector but it's phoenix, and It's sunny all the time so that wouldn't work out that well until night.

Cardboard works wonders ;)
(or room darkening shades if you're fancy)

haha.. yeah but I'd rather have it this way because the room is really small so the projector wouldn't be able to make a very big screen on the wall/screen

Have you tried messing with the speaker placement at all?

It seems like the z-5500 sats are angled for desktop use and how you have them they're aiming up at the ceiling rather than going straight to the listening position.

Also, your center is quite low in relation to the front speakers. Have you tried placing it on top of the TV rather than under? I'm not sure if you have any space up there to set it, but that would be a more ear-level placement and it would be much closer to being in the same plane as the other speakers.

Some have better zooms than others.

I can't really tell how large your room is, but mine can do a 100" screen on a 10 foot throw for example.

You make good points and I know you're the sound man ;) I don't really have any space to put the center channel on the tv.. I could lower the stands though so the speakers will be more ear-level.

Pretty nice.

I have a 27" CRT HDTV and my Logitech z5300s as my setup. They sound better than I thought they would, and that Logitech bass sure is punchy.

They sound amazing

Not in a room that size they don't. I have a pair of Alesis Satellites I bought for $200 that will out-shake, out-jam, and out-orchestra those Z's with ease.

Get a used pair of Cerwin Vegas, or put your money together and get a pair of Athena FS-1's or 2s...or anything with some frikken drivers in it bigger than an orea cookie.

Speakers that small in a main room are for old people who listen to background light jazz. :D

Well play around with it and see how the sound changes. See if one of your roommates will humor you and play some music while they move the stuff around ;)

The total height on the speakers looks pretty close to what you want, but the whole part about them aiming up above your heads is something you might want to play with. I don't remember if you can adjust the angle of them on the sats... I don't think you can.
