i saw this story about jeremy clarkson being awarded an honorary doctorate and it got me to thinking, doesn't that cheapen the honor for someone who has worked hard for years to get that degree?

i mean, he got it because he's a celebrity

personally i think it's an insult to anyone who actually got one on their own merit

what do you think?

it's not like someone could get an honorary degree and suddenly start claiming to be a real PhD. they usually give them in pretty random "fields" too.

at my college graduation, they gave the gov. of the state an honorary degree in civic service.

there is substance to the argument that people work long and hard for their degrees and seem upstaged by someone earning it through different means...

if the individual contributes to the discipline or field through other ways and receives commendation that way, i am fine with that... but some celebrity getting a degree just because he / she is famous is ... meh...
