What do you say when..

Co-workers: never. If they ask me my salary I say "same as you probably make, but it's against policy to discuss this." If they dig deeper and say "I make $___K, how about you" I just answer I am in that ballpark if proded. If they push further I shut them down.

Most people I will say: "I make a pretty decent living."

Family: "I am making $___K, describe the benes, etc."

I make a good living, I have sacrificed enough for it.
 
The dumb thing is if you know someone's position, it's not too hard to figure out a general ballpark figure of what they make, assuming their industry isn't heavily bonus-based.

Well that's just not true. I guess it depends on what your definition of ball park means, but I wouldn't consider within 30% to be ballpark, and salaries for the same position in the same company can easily vary by that much.

Well, in that case either one end of the spectrum are just bad negotiators or there's a difference in performance/responsibilities/experience. Either case just isn't very interesting.

Now if someone's compensation is largely based on their bonus or tips, then that's interesting to me because there can be a much wider degree of variation.

oh and to edit this...I had thought about filing b/k on an high 5 figure debt a year or so ago.

Yeah for close friends/family. I don't understand in general the taboo against disclosing your salary.

My co-workers aren't dumb enough to ask for numbers because it is against policy to discuss it. That I can understand.
 
It depends on the person. My fiancee's family really irked me because they are the type that will smack you in the face for asking that kind of question. But when I got hired out of college, everyone was grilling my fiancee' about what I was making. Really peeved me.

Family--sure

Friends--depends

anyone else--probably not
 
I tell my parents what I make simply because I want them to know how I'm doing.

Outside of that, I keep the information to myself outside of a few close friends.

Let me get this straight...someone writes on a forum that they make 250k/yr, and you don't automatically believe them? :hmm:
Have you told anyone else about this? It would probably be a good idea to spread the word.
