What do you say when..

What do you say when people ask you your salary? Do you tell them? If not, how do you decline without awkwardness?

Personally, if the asker is family or close friends I just tell them. (This is my first full time job just out of undergrad, if it makes a difference).

No one has ever directly asked me. My parent's saw my offer letter out of college for $50k, so they think I am rolling in money. They don't even know my raises over the last five years have amounted to more than 50%.

I never tell anyone other than my wife. Nothing good can come from it. If someone asks, I say, "I'm doing OK."

My raises over the last 1 year have equaled 50%

If family asks I'll tell them, if friends bring up the subject I just say "I do pretty well" because I know I make considerably more than all of them

Enough to pay the bills and keeps the kids fed, clothed, sheltered. Nobody but you and your SO need to know details.

"I don't know. It's direct deposited and I never look, but my bills are paid and my checks never bounce."

I have mentioned it only to people that I knew well, and only in the context of when they were considering going into related career and wanted to get some information.

Enough to eliminate my enemies, hide the bodies where they can't be found and pay off the authorities if caught.

That shuts up most people.
