This is one of those things that makes me appreciate cell phones even more. I have a land-line too, but I just keep the ringer off and only use it to call out.

*edit*

slick job dealing with the phone call in my opinion ;)

I say wrong number and hopefully I'll be removed from their list.

And, when it's hard to tell if it's a telemarketer, I can verify that way.

TM: "Can I give you a number?"
Me: "Uh...sure."
TM: *-***-***-****
Me: "Uh huh .. uh huh ... <pretends to write down number>"
TM: "Have a nice day."
Me: "Bye."

i ask....

" can i have your home phone and i call you back?"

they say....

"ummmm why. i can't give..umm"

i say....

"good now you know how i feel, please take me off you calling list"

BTW: that is a federal law. if you ask to be taken off the :call list: they legally can't call you for 10 years.

i used to be the director for a call center.

The Washington Post called so I let the man talk.

When he finished I replied "I'm blind!".

He apologised, and I was back to work. :)

Cheers!

just annoy them by doing the following:

TM: Hello, i'd like to interest you................

You: What is your company's name?

TM: Well, uh, ..............

You: How many people work there?

TM: ..............

You: How many people do you live with?

and just keep asking them questions about their personal life, and usually they hang up first.

No lie, this is what invariably happens:

Tel: Hello! are you Mrs. (horribly mispronounce my married name)

Me: no, this is (correctly pronounce my married name)

Tel: (unfazed) well we have a wonderful offer right now! for only 59.95 you can own all 12 volumes of SouthAmerican Jungle Diseases Monthly!

Me:*Crash* Oh my God!

tel: hello? is everything ok?

Me: yes, yes, everything is fine, it's just my kid <give me that or I'll--DON'T TOUCH THAT FOR GOD'S SAKE!> *crash*<MEOW>

Tel: will you be paying by visa or mastercard?

Me: PUT THE CAT DOWN! HE CAN'T BREATHE!--I'm sorry, what did you say?

Tel: I said--

Me: Mami?

Tel:Um...Hello?

Me: Mami pupu?

Tel:I beg your pardon, I don't-

Me: get off the phone!--sorry ma'am, that's just my kid on the other line-

Tel:that's quite alright. Will you be paying-

Me:Mami purple pupu?---Sweety, hang up NOW! I'm sorry, what did you say you were calling about?

Tel: I'll call at a better time, ma'am *click*

...and I never hear from them again. Strange somehow....;)

Either say "Take me off your list" or say "I'm very interested...oh...someones at the door...hold on a sec" Set the phone done and go on doing your buisness.

I just love it when the long distance companies tell me how they can save me all this money, it usually goes like this:

Me: I'm not interested, thank you.

Them: Sir, you're not interested in saving money?

Me: No.

Them: Ummm...Ok.

I had to be a telemarketer for 3 months a 2 years ago. I try to be nice cause it is really a sucky job and the last thing they need is crap from people, because they don't want to be calling you, and you don't want to be talking to them.

yeah. i used to work as a telemarketer over the summer. Starting $7 an hour, plus 25 cent raise every month. Along w/ bonuses if you're the number one seller (I got a free chinese buffet ticket once). In any case, telemarketers are a big scam, especially if they get paid to collect donations (as i did). Felt really bad b/c poorest people gave marginally the most money. It's the worst job! you make almost 100's of calls a day and you try to convince the people of the same thing over and over... i can tell you that telemarketers hate their jobs more than u hate them.

If you say put me on your do not call list they can never call you again without risking a hefty fine. If they do not say ok, and hang up when you request this they also are breaking the law and can take a huge fine.

Most of the time, I can tell a call is a telemarketer when there's that 2-3 seconds of nothing, so I'll hang up before it clicks over to a person. But they're getting more and more slick- they try to sound like someonw\e you know ("hey, is <first name> around?"). When a telemarketer asks for me, I just say, "Sorry, he's not in. Can I take a message?" Then they ask what a good time to call back, and I usually say between 9:00am and 6:00pm (when I'm never home).
