I work in a computer repair shop which is located in a store that sells computer hardware. Anyway, the question we get at least a few times a day is, "Hey what wireless card should I use, a friend of mine can catch a signal from his house and I wanna get a wireless card that'll work."

What do you say to these types of people?

Whenever I try to tell them that it is against the law for you to be using their connection unless you have permission they always jump to the "Oh yeah, they know we're using it, it's a friend of mine." But just minutes before that, they said, "Someones" cable connection, lol.

Anyone experience this?

Not trying to justify it, but people who get wireless connections should learn how to protect them.

That's up for debate.

Two things apply here:

1) There are no hard fast "laws" on the matter
2) It isnt' illegal until you get caught (told to me by a lawyer once)

You warned them. If they choose to still do it, and they get caught, then it's not your problem.

If you leave a basketball on a town's basketball court, and someone picks it up and plays for a while, then leaves it when they are done, I guess they're breaking the law too.

If I find an unsecure wireless network, and can pinpoint it's origin, I usually offer to help them secure it.... for a fee. :)

So if you leave your front door unlocked at night, can I come in and hop in bed with you?

Yup. It's like speeding or using dope - people are gonna do it, whether it's against the law or not. Some will get caught, some won't. Not much you can do, except protect yourself.

I love how people always come back with "well, if you leave your door open is it ok for me to come in?"

Retort:
The wifi signal has entered my house, my car and been picked up by my computer or laptop. Should they be arrested for trespassing on my property? They could infect me maybe!

Mail them a letter with a picture of a pair of handcuffs with their IP, MAC and the SSID they connected to printed on it.

Well, weak (but catchy) arguments aside, you're using something that doesn't belong to you and without permission.

Period.
