Don't let direct-to-consumer advertising totally rule you. There are many types of anxiety medications. Paxil is in a group of medications called SSRI's along with Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro. There are numerous other anxiety meds that work in different ways to treat anxiety. It really depends on your specific type of anxiety symptoms, another drug may actually work better.

No doctor will judge you for what you think. Their job is to help you, but they can't do that if you withhold information. I would ask your primary care physician for a referral to a psychiatrist. Two benefits to psychiatrists: it's their specialty and whatever you tell them will probably be milder than other things that they've heard that week. Many people feel better talking to them for these reasons. The more you tell, the more they can help.

Good Luck!
best advice yet

TAKE IT!

I don't know why everyone keeps mentioning advertising. I found paxil on the internet and researched it. If it helps, I don't watch television with the exception of stargate. . .

Considering the wide variety of medications and treatments used to treat anxiety (if that's indeed what you have), I'd say you're a fool for declaring you need a specific medication. Use your brain.

I just wish I could try stuff, and find something that worked without having to spill my private thoughts to a man I would not even be friends with.

you don't seem to have a problem with spilling your private thoughts to people you don't know over the internet.

While there are a boatload of SSRI's, last I had read (which was, admittedly probably over a year ago) Paxil was the only one officially approved for social anxiety (for whatever "official approval" is worth).

The doctor wouldn't give you ambien because it can be "abused"

Other posters have offered much better (for your well being) suggestions, but fwiw, your doctor will most likely give you a prescription if you ask - caveat being that you specify why you are asking.

If you can clearly specify why you want it, there's no reason you shouldn't at least try it.

If you're so bad off that you can't even tell him why you want it, then he has every reason to think you need to see a specialist.

Actually, what I've told you is really nothing. I've told you that I don't want to tell why. . .

You specifically want to try something.

I want to try Paxil for anxiety.

I DO NOT WANT TO go into details about why.

Can you just say "Doc, I want paxil?"
why can't you confide in your doctor and tell him/her why?

no, they will not just prescribe it.

he cant tell his doctor yet he has no problems telling all of us...

I've wanted to try something for years - but duhhhh I am a very introverted, secrative, anxious person. I would rather have a colonscopy than tell a doctor about things I think. I don't particularly feel close to any doctor that I've ever had, this one included.

As a physician myself, ideally you should tell your doctor all your symptoms and let him/her make the diagnosis and prescribe the correct medication. That way you can get an accurate diagnosis and then the proper medication, as opposed to just something you found on a TV ad.

My girlfriend used to be on Paxil.
It was terrible for her to come off...real bad withdrawl syptoms.

I would forsure talk to your doctor, Paxil is potent and you don't wont to mess with it unless you have to.

Doesn't work.

I told my doc that I wanted viagra.

He said, "jadinolf, that's like putting a new flag pole on a condemned building".

You're a surgeon, what would you know about patient interaction, diagnosis, and medication. You just want to hack 'em up and send them on their way. :p

if you actually need it (the doctor agrees you have a problem), just tell the doctor that it is your preference. unless there is something in your medical history, they'll prescribe it.
