What do you recommend to stimulate keyboard/mouse activity so that I don't get disconnected from ISP?

I have heard of some 'stay-connected' programs but I don't know of any specifically.

I just signed up with AT&T 'net service but they disconnect me after about 15 minutes of non-activity. So when I downloading something and I'm not at the PC I end up getting booted.

What would you suggest?

Thanks!

If you use ICQ, you can stay connected, because it always pings the server to check for messages or something. I saw that work on my friend's computer, he stayed connected by leaving ICQ open, whereas he would have gotten disconnected.

The best I've used is called fake surf 3.0 it really will keep you connected. They have a newer version (5.1) but it didn't seem to work as well. 3.0 should still be on zdnet.com or download.com.

Open your mail program and ask it to check for new mail every 2 minutes. minimize the mail proggy to your task bar and go about your business. Don't download anything. It's not necessary.

Why is it that my ISP considers downloading to be "inactivity" and I get disconnected?

What type of activity needs to be maintained so I don't lose my connection? Do I have to be sending data or does any keyboard activity keep me from being disconnected?

I have a very slow internet connection so I don't have much bandwidth to spare. Therefore, I would prefer not to have a large program running that keeps me from being disconnected.

Any more suggestions?

Keyboard and mouse activity is meaningless unless you have some proprietary client-side ISP software that is checking for it.

If you signed up for AT&T's internet service, then I doubt they have any software like the free Internet ad banners-based services do. They won't know if you move the mouse anyways.

Anyways, this problem is really simple.. theres tons of software out there to simulate activity, and you could probably get away with pinging yahoo.com every 10 minutes (write a batch file, and use that task scheduler to make it run on a 10 minute interval)

I don't think some of you understand what he's trying to get at here. From my understanding, he can't just use ICQ or any other program to just ping another server on the net to stay connected. He says in his statement that he get's kicked off when he leaves his computer while he is downloading something which pretty much will give you the same effect as pinging. Obviously, he is probably getting kicked off because the ISP thinks he isn't surfing anymore. I've noticed a few ISP's will check for mouse movements as a method of determining whether you are surfing or not. There's this program called Trembler that I've used a few times for certain programs that require you to surf...ahem... but it also keeps you from getting kicked offline. I have provided a link to the file below.

Download Getright. It has an option to ping so you don't get disconnected. Plus it lets you resume downloads in case you get cut off.

Irrelevent.

There has been no indication that his ISP requires some proprietary client side software like that.

Simple suggestion:

Get a new ISP.

Most of the major companies that have internet service, do not do this. Pay the $15 a month or whatever it costs, to get MSN or some other service which you know will be fairly reliable and won't disconnect you for inactivity. Problem solved.

Unless you've used ATT Internet service yourself, you can't say that there was no proprietary software. The bigger companies usually make connecting to the internet as easy as possible so there is a possibility of it having a frontend software. After all, all dialup ISP use DUN as the means to dialout. Most people do not know how to set up DUN.

Er. Ditch the crap ISP and go with someone local, or someone that uses just straight dialup networking.

Although I seriously doubt that the ISP is disconnecting based on mouse movement. What usually determines if they disconnect or not is the lack of NEW TCP/IP connections being made. Go to a page that automatically refreshes or loads pages in a frame and it shouldn't disconnect. (They may even base it on new HTTP connections, although I doubt it).

Good evening.

In the last few days I've tried several progams that ping a site at specified intervals and none of them have stopped me from getting the AT&T "you will be disconnected in 5 minutes" warning after I've been away from the PC for exactly 10 minutes.

I can't seem to figure out what the software is looking for to prevent this disconnection.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks, Edprush

When I used to participate in those pay to surf programs, I had a couple of programs that would fake surf. Then they got smart. I got busted on one program. So I made a thing using an oscillating motor and attached it to my mouse to make it move around just enough to simulated activity. It didn't work on the ones that required active surfing, but for the ones that just required mouse movemnt, it was perfect. :)

do a google search for "Jiggy Mouse"

it is a small prog that stays in your tray in the corner while running (is that the system tray?, dunno)

you can pause it while you want to use the computer, it basically moves the mouse across the screen every couple of minutes, it was useful for some to rip off all-advantage (didn't use it myself, friends did though)
