How does a "kid" know to take a dealers bust card? Does a bust card always come out when a player incorrectly takes a card? How exactly does this affect you?

that was a response from a "seasoned" player that follow all the rules. they hate it when you go outside the norm and do dumb things like double down when the dealer is showing a king. i like playing outside the rule set that was arbitrarily placed by people watching odds of winning. i have much more fun that way.

The rules are not arbitrary. By following the rules, you are maximizing yours (and everyone else on the tables) odds. By not following the rules, you decrease yours (and everyone else on the tables) odds.

Of course, sometimes following the rules results in a table loss when not following the rules would have resulted in a table win. But the rules are all about maximizing your odds, not guaranteeing a win.

MotionMan

ya, im aware that those guidelines exist because they maximize your chances, but sometimes i like to live dangerously and outside that ruleset. it also way fun when you dd like that and the dealer busts. kind of like a free hand to me. everyone else went safe and won, but i got double. all how ya look at it, i just like to mess around more i guess. i think it stems from me always going into the casino with the mindset that im going to lose every cent i bring anyway, so make it fun!

No. Following the rules in blackjack only helps you to lose money as slowly as possible. It has no effect on anybody else. Likewise, a player who does not follow the rules is only hurting himself. Besides, if it really mattered, wouldn't the first rule be to find a table where everybody is playing by-the-book blackjack? If you look up proper blackjack play, it makes no mention of type of player who is sitting at your table.

"helps you to lose money as slowly as possible" = "maximizing your odds"

And if you think that if third base keeps keeps taking the damn face card we all know is coming when the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 showing is not affecting the rest of the table, you're crazy.

Besides, if it really mattered, wouldn't the first rule be to find a table where everybody is playing by-the-book blackjack?

And who said that is NOT the first rule of Blackjack? If someone at the table starts acting like an ass, I get up and find a table with people who know what they are doing.

You should take that attitude to the poker table where the only peoples money you are losing is yours. When you play Blackjack, the players at the table need to act like a team, otherwise everyones odds are not maximized.

(Again, maximized odds does not mean guaranteed winning.)

Exactly. Other people at the table only make a difference in your head. While other people can affect your return over the short term (you could have won the hand with the cards that came out later) mathematically other people make no difference over the long term.

As an analogy, it's like saying you like to play the flip-a-coin game. Etiquette says you don't fart before your flip because the extra wind affects future play, a kind of butterfly effect. People only have that rule because they don't want you to fart. It's annoying. It has no bearing on how you win or lose.

Preposterous. ;)

Believe what you want (and I have read the articles) but I have found that, more often than not, bad play at third base results in me losing my money faster. Maybe it is in my head, but it can be confirmed in my wallet as well.

That's why when I do play BJ, I will look for a spot on third base, or I'm not playin that table. ;)

Yeah, but sometimes open third bases are hard to find. I do try to watch a table for a couple hands to see how Mr. Nettles is doing before I sit down.

Other people's play in Blackjack has absolutely no effect on your own hand, or your own odds. The only thing that it helps (or hinders) is if you have the ability to card count, and even then the effect is negligible in today's 6 deck games. Any illusion that other people's play affects your winnings is a made up one. Why do I sense you are one of those guys that goes ballistic at someone when he stands when he has 14 showing, and the card that was supposed to bust him busts you instead?

Because you are a bad judge of character?

I am actually helpful to people at the table, but only when they ask for help. I do not react to others bad play (other than leaving the table). Usually the dealer will say something well before I ever would.

I am actually a pretty nice person to play Blackjack with.

Why would you leave the table over someone's 'bad play' when it has no effect at all on your own game? You are saying yourself that people's play does affect your own actions. This is where the problem is. Whether or not you blow up at the table, you are getting rattled for something which has no effect at all to your game.

I don't know why, but these guys who sit at the table, coming in and out of the game, drive me nuts.

There's a vibe at a blackjack table. When the deck is running face rich you bet differently than not. By bad play by people it "messes" that advantage up.

I just get up and go to another table, where I ALWAYS play 3rd base. More times than not I increase my bankroll 3-10 times rather than lose it all, primarily because I see more cards in front of me.

Craps and Blackjack only.

I love both games.

Craps is more fun, but I play boring craps, only betting the min on the pass line and maxing out the odds behind it. It really ticks me off when a bunch of 6's and 8's hit and I'm not on them, but I stick to my guns.

Blackjack I've been playing for close to 12 years now, I strictly play 2 deck (did have fun playing 1-deck in Vegas though). I'm a pretty good counter, but I like to drink, and I get tired, so I count for one shoe on, then take off the next shoe and just play braindead basic strategy and so forth. Definitely up fo life playing 12 years, however I've had my share of bad losses.

I do not make anyone uncomfortable, I help when I can, and I quietly leave when I have seen enough of a bad player.

Based on my personal experience, a bad player, especially at third base, has an adverse effect on my bankroll. I will not sit there and lose money to satisfy the Thought Police.

I take the Lewis Black approach to casinos. I take my roll of quarters up to the casino hotel room and one by one flush each of them down the toilet. And every so often the toilet backs up and I feel like a winnar.

Seriously, I look at casinos as lost money so actually haven't been to one yet. Plus not living near a casino sure makes a difference too.

I don't play blackjack, what do dealers say to bad players?

They may shake their head when someone asks for a hit. They may pull a card out half way and nod when someone does not ask for a card. Sometimes they will say, during or after a hand, "The book says you should/should have hit/stay/double/split."

Some are nicer than others.

You'd f*ckin love playing with me man. When I have a 12 against a dealer 2 or 3 I'm like Jesus Christ when it comes to saving the table and either hitting and taking the big 7 or 8 or staying and letting the dealer bust with a 10. I've been complimented many a time on my Christlike 3rd base play.

I always hit a 2 into a 2 or 3, depending on where the cards are of course. ;)
