BlackJack - hard to lose money quickly, easy to make money quickly
Craps - easy to lose money quickly (bad streak), easy to rack up thousands (good streak)
Video Poker - fun to relax, get drinks, etc. Hard to lose money quickly, can occasionally get lucky.

5/10 dollar slots when I have money to blow.

Never been to a Casino, but if I were to I?d most likely play Blackjack and Roulette since they are the only two games I?d be familiar with.

Ohh, and Texas Hold'em.

The odds bet is even money. The pass line bet has the house advantage. So the more odds you are allowed to take, the less of an advantage the casino has.

Of course, it's best to play nl poker or a limit high enough (~6/12) to counteract the rake. Of course, you have to know how to play, which is the catch. Otherwise, it's a pretty quick way to throw your money away.

How does a "kid" know to take a dealers bust card? Does a bust card always come out when a player incorrectly takes a card? How exactly does this affect you?

Slots are generally terrible for the player, so the key is observe and let someone else lose for a while.

What exactly do you mean by that? Are you trying to imply that you are somehow winning the money that person lost? That's not how that works.

well, nevada law says machines have to pay out 97% of what they take in. it's gotta come out at some time.

So? It will come out at a rate of $0.97 for every $1 you put in. IOW, you will eventually lose your money.

You're miscontruing the law of averages. The machines have no memory. It's all random. And a particular random outcome is not more likely to occur just because it has not happened recently.
Everytime you flip a coin, the odds are still 50/50 for heads even if the last 10 flips were tails. Everytime you push the button on the slot machine, the odds stay the same.
Sadly, this mentality is so common though that it's actually a formal logical fallacy, known as the gambler's fallacy.

Yep. It doesn't matter whether someone lost the last 1000 slot machine pulls, the 1001st is no more likely to pay off.

I tried teaching my friend how to play hold em but it didn't work. She believes she has a system to beat roulette. You can't help someone like that.

First of all Nevada has no such law. The slots you play in the airport are probably 80% return, which is probably the legal minimum for that jurisdiction. If you want I can look up the exact number for you.

Second, no it doesn't have to come back out at some time. It *probably* will just by the laws of mathematics. It doesn't *have* to.

how can they comply with a 97% payout when each play is an independant result from a RNG? is it derived from the many teirs of "winning"?

i know statistically it about evens out, but if it is then its doing it for the people who sit after me. everytime i sit down the person at third base hitting on a 16 while the dealer is showing a 3 seem to get that 10 and bust and then the dealers hole card is sure enough a 10 and then she'll hit an 8 and doom the whole table.

and i do realize you should only be playing for yourself and not for the table, but why mess everyone else over and also take yourself out of the round if you do bust? at least play the percentages and hope the dealer busts instead of watching your cards end up in the shoe without even seeing the dealers hole card yet.

True, but saying that there's an 80% or 97% return isn't valid simply because the slot machine is likely to be emptied frequently(daily, I would guess). With a little monitoring, I'm sure you could balance the winnings of the house pretty easily.

You can beat roulette but it involves computers and lasers.
