Since everything is Iraq, Iraq, Iraq it has been a bit difficult to follow US politics over here. So besides Iraq, what are the subjects which seem to most important in the debate on who are to be elected as candidates.

On a side note the news over here report that more and more Americans are looking back at the time with Bill Clinton in a more and more positive manner, is that true and what are the reasons?

Both GHB and Bill Clinton were sandwiched between to totally fiscally irresponsible Presidents
in Ronald Reagan and GWB. And both of the latter simply kited public debt.

In contrast, I don't think GHB or Bill Clinton were anything to really brag about, their main success is in the failure to do anything really stupid. GHB laid the groundwork for the recovery from Reagan and Bill Clinton was able to reap the benefits while extending the recovery. But neither GHB or Bill Clinton have really defined a post cold war role for the US. But GWB has defined what not to do while being fiscally irresponsible and extremely stupid in all his public policies.

Our next President is going to have the thankless job of starting repairing the damage GWB has done. I see little hope that the next President will be able to do much more than that.

The eits list of needed characteristics start with.

- educated
- personable
- modest
- professional
- open-minded
- comforting smile and disposition
- doesn't seem to care about personal gain
- trustworthy (obviously honest)
- transparent

Add some vision and political cat herding and look at the current field of contenders.
And you get none of the existing choices. But Obama, Edwards, Dodd, and Kucinich come closest.

Yeah, that is weird. If we were talking about Uganda a few people might question how a democracy produces for 20 years presidents from two families only...

As far as the issues go:

- Will close the border and sanction/fine/jail employers.
- Cares about reducing government size/power/money/abuses. (They are all together)
- Does not support nuclear proliferation amongst violent radical nations.

I?ll let you know when I find a candidate.

As long as American's are choosing them, they can elect anyone with any last name, or the same last name. But not picking someone because of their last name is about as intelligent as picking someone because of their last name.

If the next president can pull that off, he/she'll have my applause. Just as long as too much else isn't screwed up in the process.

I'm looking for a strong Conservative who's going to take this country back from the illegals and restore fiscal conservatism. A Reagan-esque figure who speaks softly but carries a big stick.

Fred Thompson fits the bill.

For starters, somebody who's not a dry drunk, and who can correctly pronounce "nuclear".

After that, somebody who doesn't resort to the fearmongering that's become oh-so popular since 9/11, which rules out all the repub contenders except ron paul, and he doesn't have a prayer, anyway...

At this point I'll be so overjoyed that it isn't Bushco I don't think I'll care. I almost never vote for the main two parties so what I want in a President I probably won't ever get. The best I can hope for is that they cherish civil liberties (all of them), respect reason and intelligence, and leave their freaking religions at home and church.

As for the Clinton thing, I never had a problem with him in the first place. However compared to Bush the man was the second coming so I do miss him just that much more.

I care about one thing as the most important thing: having an agenda based on the needs of the human race and all Americans, not an agenda for the few.

To get into secondary traits, I'll say, one who is able to help lead the society to a more moral level, who can help Americans more appreciate the value of human life, and to help the world move away from its wrongs.

Examples: FDR's empowerment of the middle class at the expense of the rich
Truman's battles against racism
Eisenhower's 'military industrial complex' speech
JFK's speech to the nation on race as a moral issue, his pursuit of freedom for historically colonized third world nations
LBJ's war on poverty (quiet, right wingers; it led to a permanent 1/3 reduction in the poverty rate, and that's a good thing, and you are against it?)
Nixon's signing environmental legislation
Carter's Camp David efforts
Reagan's attempts, though inadequate, against nuclear weapons
George H. W. Bush's occasionally 'doing the right thing', from not invading Iraq further, to raising some taxes for the good of the nation at political cost
Clinton's unsuccessful attempt to end discrimination against gays in the military

I'll need it.

The one I see running now who is close is Dennis Kucinich.

i know this one quality will automatically disqualify every candidate out there to some degree, but after listening to all the lies coming out of the bush camp for all these years, i would really like to see an honest, open and forthright president for once. you know, just to be completely different from the bush/cheney style of being deflective, obtuse, secretive and dishonest.

besides that, having a reputation for being compassionate, even-tempered, quick witted with good situational awareness would go a long way.
