Inspired by other thread.

I like the neck jerking action of stomping on my accelerator and watching the cars become small in my rearview mirror. Then once I get to the speed limit I usually dont go much over.

I feel like a high top speed is attainable by anyone if they keep their foot mashed to the ground long enough.

i've never found my car's top speed. well, 90 may have been my taurus's top speed, so maybe i did find that. but none others.

acceleration is more fun.

Acceleration. You can get a kick out of accelerating to 50-60mph and that's legal. No place to run top speed, so it's irrelevant.

Acceleration. If you can't get ahead by 60-100 you've already lost. Anybody can keep their foot in it and eventually catch up to you and pass you with a ricer fly by... 5 minutes later after you've slowed down to take your exit. And even then if their lane ended at a merge, it doens't matter if they can catch you on the top, you beat them there and they get to stay behind you the rest of the way after starting it.

Plus the window of opportunity to have fun. If you are in a car that accelerates slowly and wish to attain a high instantaneous speed, the window in which you are doing excessive speed is long.

Two stock eco boxes racing each other and staying side by side and traveling over a mile at almost 100 mph trying to get an inch on one another is far more dangerous (and open to a longer window of exposure to cops, tickets, and fatal accidents for a longer period of time) than a car that can zip to 100 in 3 gears in the blink of an eye, change lanes, brake/coast and be done and over with it in a few seconds without any drama before anyone has time to look up.

This poll is meaningless because there is no context.

If top speed meant going 600mph over salt bed test track in an experimental car, obviously, I will enjoy the top speed more than accelerating to that point.

If acceleration meant going 0-100mph in car capable of doing it under 10 seconds, obviously, I will enjoy acceleration.

In the USA 99% of cars are electronically limited to 150 anyways so acceleration it is.

Definitely acceleration if we are talking public roads. There isn't much point in having a vehicle that goes over 80mph in Los Angeles county unless you go to the track, CHP will find you and tax the crap out of you, even impound or crush your car.

I've maxed out my z28 once at ~155mph when I was angry. Cruised at that speed for a few miles on Interstate 10. Wouldn't say it's fun on the freeway, just stupid. Doubt I'll ever know my WS6's top speed.

I never get tired of doing zero to * runs though.

This post is full of truth. I have an econobox, and I like to "race" other econoboxes (Mazda3s, Golfs, Civics, Cobalts, etc), but only up to maybe 75-80mph in a 60, and that only takes a couple of seconds, then I go back to my usual 5mph over. I like to race faster cars too, like Vettes, Vipers, 911s, and so on, but only for the honor of seeing them use all that power in an awesome display. I use 'race' loosely, because I really don't think 'race' applies to vehicles that can't crack a 4 second 0-60 run or a 12 second 1/4.

This doesn't really apply. Anyone who has a car even capable of hitting 150 already had the speed limiter disabled when they got their first chip/tune/whatever ;)

Acceleration. Easier to use and more fun and not as dangerous. Also, you're going to get in trouble going from 0-60 balls-out in a corvette but you're going to get gang raped in prison if you go balls out in that came corvette on the highway and get caught doing 170.

I like to define 'race' as one car definitively whooping another car in a short acceleration contest, eg: see who's car is quicker. Two cars in the same ball park that can't pull away from each other by 60-100 isn't really a race with 1 winner and 1 loser. It just becomes a long drawn out contest of speed of two equally fast cars where the person who "wins" is the person who lets off second. At that point it's no longer about seeing which car is faster, but who is the most wreckless and has the biggest ego.

If I haven't pulled a clear lead or gotten smoked by 100, it's already obvious both cars are equally stupid fast and it's pointless to continue. What is there to prove, that I *might* be an inch ahead or an inch behind at 64837475030 MPH?

Acceleration. Can't ever really use the top speed, but I can always use the acceleration.

Deceleration, too.

Lateral Acceleration.

I voted for top speed, because ultimately, it's the speed that actually creates the excitement. Sure, top speed is a little different, but still, speed is underlying basic for fun.

I can accelerate from 0-3mph really really really fast. It's called sprinting. With my feet. And it's not that fun.

Also, speed, in its purest form is also just fun. 100+ miles per hour sustained is more fun than bursts of acceleration.

Back to Lateral acceleration... it's the handling (twists and turns) that makes a car truly fun. Straight line can only entertain you so much.

You really think that if I put you in my Prius and we gently cruised up to 90 mph and held it for a few minutes it would be more fun than if you were slammed back almost breaking your spine in a performance car and it took you 6 seconds to get up to 90?

Out of the two I'd say top speed, it's just exhilarating even though you can't have too much fun in the US without losing your license of course.

Personally I prefer the feeling of g forces during cornering, particularly on a sportbike. Something about being at full lean, knee barely skipping the ground in perfect crouch, almost kissing the mirror all while your tires are barely at the limit of traction..

Edit:

After thinking about it, I think I'm desensitized to acceleration after the time I've spent on literbikes.
