very beautiful, climate similar to my florida, it's good to be ethnically chinese there b/c of the disproportionate amt of wealth, power, and prestige achieved by the ethnic chinese minority, very small, good-sized financial market

Crowded, tropical, lots of high rises. Clean, low crime rate, harsh punishments for crimes.

My grandparents lived there a few years. They have this candy made from a fruit called "Durien" and it smells so God awful it's not allowed in most theatres and subways there. Tasty though. :)

I visited there for 10 days some years ago. It's a nice place. Awesome weather and you feel very safe, or at least we did. AFAIK some elevators have piss sensors to prevent people peeing in them and of course gum is illegal. They have lizards that climb on the walls in some restaurants and the taxis are very cheap.

I know that they're very fussy about people bringing cigarettes into their country  They nailed me with a carton of smokes I picked up in Bali for a friend, said I could be fined $250US for bringing them in...I did some fast talking and made friendly chat and he let me go..with the smokes in hand :D I still had the nerve to ask him about the chewing gum issue

The place is as sanitary as a shopping mall, which is what it is. Ten years before when I visited there, Raffles was a mid-range backpackers hotel. When I went back the second time...it was a palace!! All the same, its lost much of its "charm" and I went on my way to Malaysia the same day.

That's one of the most nasty crap in the world. My parents love them. My aunts and uncle love them. Dayum, I think I'm the only one in the family that hates them. :D

-Most mercedes benz per square mile.
-A compact car such as a corolla or civic will easily cost over US$100,000.
-Car registration lasts for 10 years after which the owner must give up his/her vehicle.

-77% percent ethnic chinese.
-Hyper-competitive society. Children in school are constantly tested and virtually told what they are able to achieve in life.
-Government has heavy influence in their market economy. Most major industries are controlled by the government.
-Prime Minister, not the President, leads the country.
-Has made incredible economic progress since their independence.

-Bubble gum is illegal.
-Very clean. Very safe or low crime.

If your dad own a house in Singapore, you're one of the richest in Singapore.

unusual forms of punishment are a regular occurence (i.e. beating with a cane)... little more than the size of a small county (very small) highest people per sqaure mile (i think its up in the 10,000's)

course i dont know any of this for sure, i didnt search, but wasn't it in the news a few years ago that an American was caught doing graffiti and was sentenced to a cane beating?

I think the united states navy would like to create a substantial base of operations for their southeast asia operations. With the loss of bases in the philliapines, singapore would be the next logical choice.

sounds like too much government control on people's lives..but if they like it that way and feel safe, who's to complain. My question is, what if i take a huge crap in a public restroom and don't flush? i hope no one's actually monitoring that.
