what do you keep your thermostat set to?

we leave ours at ~70F all year long

peak summer electric usage for cooling is about $120/month
peak winter electric usage for heating is about $110/month

we have a geothermal/ground source heat pump
 
Haven't set it higher than 65° F since I've been back to my apartment. It was weird... we were required to set the heat to 60° while gone over break, except my roommate and I came back and didn't even turn it back up for a few days. It gets way too hot on the second floor where are bedrooms are, and we are hardly downstairs. I had my window open for hours last night (and it was what, maybe 15°?) cause it was hot as hell which the landlord would probably hate to see seeing as he pays for the heat but the heat was hardly on.

So it's nice as this is the first place where heat has been included, but it probably doesn't matter much as it stays warm as hell in here without the heat turned up much. I think it's just being in an apartment building with others around. That and my big high performance rig probably kicks out a fair amount of heat.
 
0 when I'm not home, then around 20 when I am. This is only during Fall/Winter of course.

I'm pretty sure my neighbor has a grow room that's keeping my apartment warmer than it would be otherwise.

my thermostat has a timer, but I've never figured out how to use it... even at 60, though, it's reasonably warm thanks to the extreme amounts of heat generated by our shared wall.
 
For Heat: When I'm Home - 70, When at Work - 60 (timer set to go back to 70, 10 minutes before I come home).
For AC: When I'm Home - 68, When at Work - 78 (same timer settings)

80 is crazy though... not only would it cost a ton, I'd be so damn hot I'd have the window open, costing even more.


I didn't realize so many people switched their thermostats large amounts for short periods of time (i.e. 60 to 70 for an hour or two then back to 60, up to 70 a few hours later). I thought that cost a lot as opposed to just setting it inbetween or so and leave it for that amount of time?
 
73-74 Winter (turned down to 68 when I go to bed)
72-73 Summer (same 68 before going to bed)

Avg cost is $100.-$130./mth (Electric Heat Pump)

On a slightly related topic, we have one person here who is ALWAYS "too warm" in an office of about 15-18 people. We have a lock boxed thermostat because people would dick around with it, right? Well, ALL of us are freezing our asses off, every winter. All of us except ONE woman, who in her divine hot-flashed wisdom, gets her way because she whines about it the most. We have the AC running right now, and the temperature outside is a balmy 0F - 5F. YAY FOR BITCHY WOMEN! Even the other gals here are pissed at her.

Seriously, the needs of many outweigh the needs of her, or at least that's what I thought.

*Shivering in his 3 layers of shirt, shirt, sweater* God my coffee is even cold, already, and I've had it for about 20 minutes.

Unless you have a heat pump it'll never cost more to set it back heat or A/C. That goes for all electrical devices too. The reason that heat pumps can cost more is if they have a large temperature swing to make up for they'll turn on electric coils to make up the difference, defeating the purpose of a heat pump.
 
So far in my new apartment, I turn on the furnance for a half hour once every couple of days. People below me keep their apartment nice and warm so mine is on average, 70F. Dunno about the summer yet, prolly 70-72ish

my heating bills have been averaging $80-90 since I moved into this 1-bedroom. it's a nice change from the $200-250 I was paying in my old apartment .

I just leave it at 71 all the time.

Gas bill = $100 for a 1900 s.f. townhouse (end unit, only one shared wall).
