what do you guys think was the first game with major online ability?

probably doom over kali. The first game I can remember being sold as a network game was netmech, an addon pack for mech warrior 2.
 
Define major online capability. If you mean a large number of players, then it'd be something more recent. If you merely mean that the online part of the game is essential to the game, its core gameplay being online, that it'd be one of the earlier MUDs.

Quake 1 was the first to have up to 32 people at one time I believe. With all the mods (CTF, TF, Rocket Arena, etc..) it was the only thing like it at the time. You also had the whole quake world thing.
