I ran out of Dr. Who episodes, so I went back and started Torchwood again. I started it about a year ago and faded after a couple of episodes. This time I've made it to season 2 so far, but I'm still a little meh. I liked Barrowman's character well enough in Dr. Who. On Torchwood I probably like him a little less. Eve Myles does a good job. The others I haven't really warmed to. The writing also seems a little scattershot, with episodes varying wildly in terms of tone, focus, and approach to the story. Season 2 seems to rely a lot more on trick shots and camera movements. Just sort of not getting it.

I have been thinking about watching this, i'm interested to see what the responses are. I really like Barrowman's character, but I wasn't sure if he could pull off a whole show. or more that i wasn't sure if i could put up with that character carrying a whole show.

What annoyed me was I didn't know the show existed. Then suddenly I'm watching Doctor Who and all these guest people are on that I'm supposed to know or something. So I had no idea who these people were but the show revolved around some history of them I knew nothing about. I'm like....uh what's going on here?

I watched Season 4 when it was on. I was not impressed at all. Curious how it stacks up to the other seasons...

I like the idea of Torchwood, but I think the execution was mediocre at best. I could never really get into it, and I love Doctor Who.

Currently watching Dr. Who and Torchwood in the psuedo-order they are supposed to be.
I want to like it more that I think I am... I don't know really. It is pretty good I guess.

I hear that the mini-series/tv movie spin off, children of earth or whatever it is... is supposed to be debatably the best story line from any of the modern Dr. Who universe.
Pretty much the reason I am bothering with Torchwood.
Also Jack Harkness was by far the best part of Dr. Who yet. He is fucking very entertaining. Kinda wish he was more entertaining in Torchwood..

Also wtf is with all those long distance shots of him just standing on buildings and ledges... wtf is that??

I thought the premise of Children of Earth was awesome, and it was executed very well.

I watched the first episode and like all British shows I have ever seen, it wasnt very good. Somehting is off about British shows, maybe it is the cameras they use or something but they always look different and are not very good from the ones I have seen

Yes, Children of Earth is really about the best part of the modern Dr. Who/Torchwood universe.

Torchwood is very hit or miss. Some very good episodes and some very bad ones. The Capt. Jack character was difficult to transition to a central character. He was better as the rogue dropping into the Doctors adventures rather than having to be the main character.

I thought the episodes with James Marsters, Spike from Buffy, were the best regular season Torchwoods.

It was OK but not great. Better than the couple of episodes that I saw of the Sarah Jane Smith adventures :)

One good thing about it is that people die. So if someone is in danger (other than Jack) you don't know for sure if they'll make it to the next episode. With Hollywood TV it needs to be a Very Special Episode or contract negotiation time for that to happen.

Twice I have tried "getting into" this show and both times with the same result. I watch a few episodes, and while I like it overall, it just didn't draw me in enough to keep watching it.

Agreed on all counts. Sometimes it was good, more times it was bad. Season 2 and Children of the Earth (season 3) are the best, while seasons 1 and 4 are rather awful for their own reasons.

Though the orgasm alien was something one could only get away with on the BBC...

That's the problem with Torchwood....

S1 and S2 are OK, I liked them, but alot of people might find them so so...

but S3 is some of the best television ever. Personally, it's worth sitting through the first 2 seasons to get aquainted with the backstory and characters just to watch S3 (Children of Earth). It's presented in a 5 - 2 hour blocks and is just amazing in execution. If you watch this and not the others, I imagine you probably will not think it nearly as good because you won't have the..."attachment" to the characters. I also think that if you can't get passed the in your face homosexuality that persists almost constantly in the series, it could put you off to it (thus not really liking the characters and not getting engaged in the storyline).

S4 was not nearly as good (it had alot to live up to) and it was bought out by Starz and brough to the US. People were just glad to have another season. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as previous.

I should say, the wife and I tend to really like British shows more than US shows these days...so we're biased.

Yeah, Capt. Jack is a great character in Doctor Who, and I'd love to see him appear again on occasion. Maybe he'll show up in the upcoming special?

I liked Torchwood. My take is gay people usually like Jack, straight people, maybe not so much.

I gave it a shot when it first premiered... First few scenes involved a sex crazed monster/parasite, sloot getting banged in a public washroom, and I didn't feel like watching anymore. Better T&A elsewhere.

I did watch a good chunk of Miracle Day... Twas mediocre.

Awesome to know I have that to look forward to. The first two seasons aren't anywhere near bad enough to keep me from watching, just didn't grab me the way Dr. Who did from the very first episode.

I guess that isn't surprising, given that every other episode seems to involve some deep liplocking between Jack and Ianto or the Rogue Time Agent, or whomever. I think I'm pretty much as tolerant as they come, but the fact is I still like to see guys kissing girls _much_ more than guys kissing guys.

You really should watch Children of Earth. Just a whole different level.

It's also a change from Doctor Who where Jack was omnisexual, just as interested in Rose as in the Doctor.

They always had the undercurrent of attraction between Jack and Gwen.
Though I thought Tosh was the hotter babe. Great legs.

I actually really liked Torchwood (Doctor Who anagram) and the 2 miniseries.

I should check out The Sarah Jane Adventures.

A really weird hot mess that was. I didn't really like it, but I watched it all for some unknown reason.
