All of this stuff is coming from dell preconfigured, it's not that I can't build it, but that I don't want to play the tech support 'bitch' from now till the end of eternity.

3.4GHZ Pentium 4
1GB 533mhz DDR 2
Windows 2003 Small Business Server
3Yr Same Day Tech Support
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
(2) SATA 80GB hdds in Raid 1
PV100T Tape backup 20/40gb /w Veritas Backup Exec and media
5 additional CAL licenses for Windows 2003 SBS
Norton Antivirus 2005

Total: 3333CAD or 2743 USD

that looks expensive to me.
You can build an Dual CPU Opteron server with that sum of money.

Sorry if I am wrong, I'm not too sure since I don't know how much tape drive costs. (You need that anyway?)

Depending on the application load you might want to save money on a slower processor (3.0 is probably fine if not running massive SQL Server apps, 2 GHz celeron is fine for a pure file server)

If you are doing something taxing like heavy SQL Server loads, then 2 GB memory makes sense.

a lot of it is software licensing.. which is what half the people here dont buy anyway...

windows small business - 500
5 additional cals - 175
the drive probably cost 350-600.. dell probably charges a lot for it..
software runs another 600

2743 USD
-500
-175
-500
-600
= a system for around 1k

for a small business to live without a tape drive, you might as well close shop and give me the $ for the opteron system now.

We're planning on using it for another 5 years or so, so we figured we may as well dough out another 100 or so for a slightly faster processor. That and I'm a staunch anti-celeron.

Yeah we need that tape drive, as all of our customer invoices, project lists, quotes and plans, and payroll are all on there.

Licensing and technical support man, thats what it is. Without all of the extra stuff we added the computer was about 1500CAD.

You might upgrade to a DVD burner as emergency backup in case the tape drive fails -- 4 GB is better for that than 650 MB CDs.

True but thats something I'll do after the fact, they aren't that expensive anyhow.

Plus the hard drives are in raid 1 and are setup to mirror eachother.

DVD burner or tape, the name of the game is offsite backup. RAID 1 is great if a drive fails.

After replacing expensive tapes for years, (check into how often they SHOULD be replaced) I switched the wife's office over to DVD backup and never looked back.

Just something to think about.
