Also, you might want to add a reminder of American date convention.
Sept 20, 2009 not 20 Sept 2009. A list of month names might be handy for this.
European date order is alright, so long as they spell out or abbreviate the month name. It's if they use European date order with all numerals that they will have problems.

ugg...

I used to work for a company based in Europe but with an office in the US and we had huge problems with it. Everyone in the European office used the Euro format, but stuff coming out of the US office depended on who did the typing and once it was in the database it was anyone's guess what format it was in.

I personally prefer the euro method, but I use YYYY MM DD for my mp3's because then sorting works perfectly

another option would be debit card/online banking

srs. if youre going to teach them something, teach them how to swipe a card and use billpay, and save everyone some time in the damn store.

This. The only thing worse than an old person writing a check at a store is an old non-English-speaking person writing a check at a store.

Its more for when they have to write a check to pay utility bills, insurance, and what not.

Bullshit, I use 20Sep2009 just fine.

I use this, too.

I have seen your post here and I agree, you do use a lot of bullshit.

Most checks have the word "dollars" already printed at the end of the line so you don't actually have to write the word dollars.

So in this case your check would read "Six Hundred Eighty Dollars ------- Dollars" assuming it is preprinted.

Do they have computer/internet access? Online bill pay can do all that for free.

Although, I guess that would be too complicated since it apparently is for most people anyway.

Actually, online bill paying does kind of suck a lot of the time. I pay some of my bills online, but my power company goes through an especially shitty online payment service that I never use. However, for that one I pay over the phone (through an automated system).

Does your power company offer an address to have a check mailed to? I'm sure they must.

Because, at least with Bank of America, you log on to the banks website, enter the payment address, your account info with the payee, and the amount, and they will mail a check for you.

Hell, you can pay any one that way. It doesn't matter who. It's a really simple function. Perhaps I am taking it for granted? Do other banks not offer this? I was under the assumption all personal checking accounts came with something like this.
