I always built my own system, and after years of not liking macs I decided to get the core duo mac mini and the 20 inch lcd. I got an old 1ghz system so it's about time for a new system. Figure I don't play games that much anymore so I don't have much to lose.

what you guys think? am i gonna miss PCs? will i have problems with compatibility

Not true anymore. You'd be hard pressed to find a non-Apple PC with the specs the Mini has for less.

Just bought a Dell for the folks with better specs and was cheaper.

You can think anything you like, the mac mini is pretty weak for the price. $600 for a box of outdated parts is just crazy. The dell I got was much faster, bigger harddrive, came with keyboard/mouse/monitor, and was cheaper. Getting the mini is just silly and a waste of money. Much like SLI, or even better.. quad SLI.

You're a fanboy that doesn't even look at specs before making a post. A dual-core Yonah is FAR from an outdated part. Did your Dell have built-in 802.11g and Bluetooth? What about FireWire? iLife '06? Mac OS X? Have a small form factor? Slot-load DVD-RW drive? Remote? 10-ft interface?

BTW, 80GB is plenty for most people. If you're using more then that, you should have some kind of external solution to ensure data integrity to begin with.

EDIT: SLI is not a waste, depending on the use. I have a 30" Apple display, and gaming on that could be significantly benefitted with SLI. Many, if not most games cannot play at the native 2560x1600 resolution on just one 7800GTX.
 
I love my old mac cube! 450mhz of G4 goodness in a small size. It's running 10.4.4 and is painfully slow but it's still fun to experiment with (I got it for free, so what the hell right?)

OSX does have a lovely interface, and for the most part it just works. Software is a little lackluster but I think because of the ipod craze more and more people are buying macs and more developers are following the trend of offering crap for macs... but then again I could just be talking out of my ass, who knows.

MacMini is cheaper! Really?!
I just wandered over there and for $956 I got a 1.66 Core Duo, 512MB of RAM, 80GB HD, DVD-RW (slot), iWorks, Intel graphics and a keyboard/mouse. No monitor. Dell on the other hand for $1015, I get a PD 820, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD, DVD-RW, TV-tuner and remote, ATI X300, keyboard/mouse, Firewire, speakers and a monitor. Apple is cheaper my foot!

I think you're thinking of the iMac.
 
I really like it except for the fact it doesn't have a built in TV Tuner. I was really looking forward to something from Apple that would rival Windows MCE. I would have bought a media center mac mini the day it came out, if it did. I am going to hold out a little longer for my dream.

LOL, how ironic. Read one of the replies that compares the mini to a dell. The mini can't touch Dell for best bang for buck. Everyone knows Apples are more expensive for less performance. You are the fanboy here.
 
mac mini = :thumbsdown:

if you seriously need a small comp get a SFF (granted not as small as the mini), but I prefer something large enough to work on and upgrade without all the hassle of small cramped spaces - assuming you can even upgrade anything in that mac mini....

Factor in the cost of the iLife software, and consider it's free with any Mac. Also note the form factor; if you wanted a regular desktop PC, a comparison with an iMac would be better fitted. Customize out a Shuttle XPC or similar, and see where that gets you.
 
the new mini has a horrific video card, uses integrated intel POS graphics. i wouldnt even think about buying one of these if you ever plan to play any games on it. not even WoW will play well on this machine.

Free software from Apple =! free software from Dell. No arguments there.

The keyboard + mouse are worth less then $20.

The flat panel, I'll take it, is a 15"? You can find those for under $150.

Size is a factor to many, maybe not to you, but to many it is. It's a nice feature to be able to pick up your computer and take it anywhere you want, without it being a laptop. I could see many people using a Mac Mini to commute from a small business office to home.

Oh, and P4 820 =! Core Duo.
