What do you guys think about Gateway's situation?

I really fell bad for the company. I have always bought Gateway's, and I believe they are great computers. many people say their service sucks, and the company sucks, but I have never had a problem with them. I have owned4 gateway computers, and they all work perfectly to this day. They use quality parts, andI've had great customer service from them.Where exactly did they go wrong?

their service hasn't been bad for me...its just that it seems dell's was much better. just my opinion/experience

Yeah I remember buying my first PC , a P5-200 from Gateway for 1900 bucks .... 3 weeks later the PII's came out and the same amount of cabbage I paid would have gotten me a 350mhz or so ...... I remember how pissed I was .... I remember I decided to build my own PC and to learn how to do it .... I remeber having to buy a memory upgrade for my P5-200 from Gateway because no other generic stick would work with the old stick ...... I remember paying 230 bucks for 64 megs ...... I remember having to buy it because the PC came with 32 megs of ram and would lock-up when I tried to surf the web ...... I remember Gateway telling me too bad , so sorry for us selling you a PC that locks up when you try to use it ........ I remeber my mother in law buying a newer Athlon system from Gateway ...... I remember when she got it NOTHING would work that she had (printer, scanner , etc.) because they sent her it loaded with ME before ME hit it's street date ....... I remember searching for hours trying to find compatible drivers for her PC for ME .. I remeber half her stuff not working ... I remember Gateway not caring about it ...... I remember her telling gateway she was boxing the PC up and sending it back because nothing she had would work ....... I remember the biggest LOL was it was a "Gamer's Dream PC" ...... I remember 2 Joysticks at the time were compatible and they were out of stock most places ...... I remember gateway giving her 200 bucks to buy replacements for her items that wouldnt work so she wouldnt send the PC back ..... I remember me begging them to send a copy of WIN98 SE so I could just reload her PC ..... I remember them telling me "We have a contract with Microsoft and it says we can no longer ship out WIN98 , we must send ME , sorry" .......... I feel for the folks who lose thier jobs and all , but Gateway brought it on themself . They felt no remorse for shipping out a PC to my mother in law that had BIG flaws in the software . I admit Microsoft and the other OEM's have fixed those for the most part but still sending someone who knows jack squat about a PC , a very buggy PC is just wrong . She decided to keep it when they offered 200 bucks up , but I told her to send it back and buy a dell . I think sometimes now she wishes she had .

My friend worked at Gateway before. He said that Gateway was not like the old Gateway. They fired all the good managers who knew computer and changed with the stupid one. He said that 50% of their employee quit because of it. I dunno if this is true or not but that's what he said to me. I dunno the quality of Gateway system since I never bought any from them.

I couldn't be happier about Gateway's situation. Once they bite the dust, maybe Dell's stock price will improve a bit. Carnac the Magnificent predicts: HP will be next to go after Gateway.

I have nothing against any company except Compaq. They just screwed me over too many times.

I just prefer my own prebuilt one

Managed to get me some dirt-cheap speakers out of it. Here in Australia, they were selling the BA7500s for $99AU (3-speaker version for $89) I missed the 5 speaker set, so I got a 3-piece. Also picked up the BA735s for $29AU. Can't complain.

Topher: I picked up 2 sets of the 4.1 BA7500s...😀

Being delivered soon, I hope.

I just talked to a friend of mine yesterday that is a tech at one of the country stores. He told me that 90% of the layoffs are high paid upper middle and upper level managers and that these layoffs aren't having much effect at all on the country stores employees. The biggest changes he is seeing is country store managers are getting more resposibility in the areas of large sales to school systems, Local governments, and businesses in their areas rather than having some corporate yahoos who most likely don't know their business all that well handling it. If what he told me is accurate then it looks to me like a huge management restructuring with the goal of getting rid of the useless and redundant fat and at the same time getting rid of a lot of bigger salaries. I think if this is really what they are doing it will be a smart move on Gateways part. Staying lean in the management end is a very important factor to staying competitive.

NesuD, you are incorrect.

I currently am employed by gateway doing tier 2 support. The layoffs and closures here are not aimed at slimming down management -- the call centers that closed were primarily tech support and customer service. It makes my job that much more difficult.

All of the foreign operations have died, too, and many people here in the states are jobless. I know a few people in hampton and SLC that got really screwed -- and it's because of Gateway's poor performance over the past couple years. Ted Waitt, the original CEO / founder, went on a 3 year hiatus, and everything went to hell. He is back now, and is cleaning house. Hopefully this cost cutting will not only get me a bigger paycheck for overtime, but also get Gateway back in the black.

<< He told me that 90% of the layoffs are high paid upper middle and upper level managers >>

If Gateway is cutting 25% of their staff but 90% of the layoffs are managers, then this company is quite heavily managed. We all know what too many managers mean, right? Excessive policies and unnecessary work that gets created because some manager wants to get his / her idea pushed out and accepted. Unfortunately, there is a glass ceiling for people with technical skills within most companies. These limitations prevent salaried employees from being paid what managers get paid. There are ways around this, but typically it means that one has to become a consultant.

take an hour online to ask questions on boards and study up on buliding yuour own pc.. IT'S SO EASY....

you save $600+ building your own PC than some factory brand... order your big hardware parts online.. like motherboard processor and CD-ROM DVD CDRW ect.. and get like a mouse, sound card, case and all that at best buy or some place like that... cheap as hell

pricewatch.com will be your best friend!

I think it's the beginning of the end for them. Too bad. My current system is based on a Gateway (made a few mods), and it's been a great system since day 1. I've never had a bad experience with their tech support either.

Yeah, still have my first system. Came from gateway and I was pretty satisfied with it. P166 w/16mb RAM, 2.5GB hard drive. Hey, I may hook this thing back up and run it as a file server or a linux box. Would work good with my new router and cable internet😀

I can't figure out why gateway opened all those stores.. seems like a bad idea with
some cutthroat the pc business is and how tight the profit margin is.
