What do you do with your cards(christmas, bday, postcards, etc)

How long do you hold onto them?

  • Indifinitely

  • An arbitrary length of time

  • Goes in the garbage first chance I get

  • Depends on the card, explain.

What do you do with them? It's not the actual receipt of the card that I hate but the contemplation that follows with what to do with them because I always feel like I'm obligated to keep them forever. I was recently going over the ones I received over the last couple of decades and I just didn't get much sentiment out of them and as I was putting them back into the box I asked myself, what am I doing.... no... why are people doing this to me? So I went through them again and started tossing the ones that didn't have any novelty in it. In the end, I realized I spent way more time than I really wanted and just threw them all out.

Sure enough, I get another over the weekend and as I reached for the box to put in, it hits me... I'm going to have to sort through all of this again some day but I didn't want to throw it away immediately as it seemed disrespectful. Damn you cards, you're more trouble than you're worth. 😡

The really special ones get saved indefinitely. I think I've kept every single one from my grandmother for the past 5+ years. The same goes for my fiancee and her son, and my parents / brother depending on the card and the occasion.

The generic ones (neighbors, birthday cards "just because" etc.) from various people get trashed after a while. Nothing against them or their cards, I just don't have room to keep them all.

Neither my wife or I keep them very long - maybe about a week or so. I think both our valenties day cards are already in the trash.

Store bought cards? I read it, then straight to the recycle bin.

The only cards I keep are the ones my kids made.

Most of our relatives and friends send photo cards now.
We should probably keep them in a box somewhere as it is basically a photo album.

We usually throw everything away after a few weeks of it sitting on the mantle.

This. I hate clutter, cards on a table, shelf or whatever else are considered clutter. Clutter is not acceptable. I hate clutter. Fuck clutter, right in its cluttery ass.

I read them once, and then immediately toss them. I have kept a couple of cards that my kids made for me, but not a single commercial card stays out of the trash for more than a few minutes.

Open envelope.
Open card.
Shake just to be sure.
Toss on counter.
Throw away after 1) cat pukes on it or 2) kitchen grease welds it to counter.

mostly they go in the garbage after the event. My SIL actually writes the year inside of the cards she sends. As if I'm keeping them and want to figure out which year she sent which one. LOL. no way.

Recycle.

I've got too much paper as it is. Want me to keep something forever? Send it as a PDF. Then it can painlessly occupy about 10 millionths of 1 square inch on a hard drive. 😀

Christmas cards I just put them on my fireplace mantel or other spot depending on my decorations. I usually keep them till the day I take down Christmas. Then they go in the recycling.

Birthday cards and stuff like that, maybe a week or so.
