I just encountered the idea that you can eat avocado seeds. I'm OMG. OK, my compost pile is full of them, they come up in my yard sometimes and I pull them.

Eat avocado seeds!
?

At the site they warn against maiming yourself breaking into an avocado
, I'm WTF! Never had trouble with an avocado, what do these people do when confronted by a 3 YO on a tricycle? I have to wonder.

"Press on the dried seed with the back of a thick knife blade; the pit will split in two. Dice the pit halves then put into a high-powered blender, and pulse until it has turned into a powder."

They go in compost. Had a tree start in the pile last year, and I made a post asking the likelihood of it surviving(just about zero). They grow too tall to protect from MD winter. It was fun seeing it grow for a bit though.

edit:
and LoL at cutting yourself! CA definitely needs a label for that. Can't have the stupid people selecting out of the population. We just need to make sure they stay in CA :^D

How do you all cut them? I usually eat them as chunks with a bit of salt or adobo. I cut around lengthwise leaving 2 halves, with one side having a pit. I catch the pit with the knife, and flick it in the compost bucket, then peel the skin with my fingers, and cut up the fruit.

The smaller ones work great in a slingshot, I shoot them at the neighbors cat or try to bounce them off of the side of vegan's heads, but only if the vegan tells me they are vegan within the first 5 minutes of meeting them. Vegans just walking by get a pass.

I look up on the net if it's safe to feed them to my dog. And if it's ok then I would grind them up first.

I was born in California and I think the skin is great. It can be toasted dry and crispy and has a unique flavor that goes well on salads as does the ground-up pit.

If you don't eat all of anything its life meant nothing. And trees need hugs just like everyone else.

Huh... Never considered eating either. Doubt I'll try the pit. That would require pulling out gear I wouldn't otherwise use, but the skin is approachable. Just bought some today, so I'll be able to try it after they ripen.

I do the same but don't bother removing the skin. Just scoop out the "meat" after removing any rotting portions with whatever, toss the skin in the compost with the seed. A bit of salt is good on avo. Still wonder if I should toss the seed in the blender for whatever. Wonder if it will dull the blender blades, no laughing matter, my blender's blades are hard to sharpen, they are hell of weird.

I'd be leery of pesticides on the skin.
Why? Do you have reason to believe that they spray them? Avos grow pretty high up in trees, it would be hard to spray them. When I was in Hawaii the wild avos I found under trees (wind falls) didn't show signs of infestation, IIRC.

I have successfully grown an avocado seed in my office with no natural sunlight. Over 2 years now. Can't maintain leaves tho. Should put it in the sun soon.

I've planted Florida Avocados before. The trees are quite tall, and do best with more than one tree. Like most avocado trees, they're not cold hardy in the slightest. But, the fruit tastes great. Haas avocados are better for dips and smoothies imho 'cause of their high fat content, but Florida avocados are firmer and great for sandwiches and hand burgers. They're also a little lighter in flavor and don't tend to dominate the palette like Haas avocados do.

Yeah, we used to do this when I was a kid. Poke 3 toothpicks in side and suspend in water in a glass and set on window sill. Sends down roots, sends up a growing shoot. Kinda fun.

I don't know if avos would grow and produce here outside. Night time temperatures can drop below freezing but do so only rarely, maybe every 3-5 years and the coldest it's gotten here in the last 50 years is maybe 25F.

Edit: Just looked it up. The coldest temperature in nearby Oakland since record keeping started in 1889 is 24F on Jan. 5 1949.

I don't do this but only because I am lazy and talentless or maybe just lazy.

Spud Cannon - Thrum a Dum (Official Video)

Whenever I watch music videos with guitars in them, I am always disappointed that they are never as into it as Flea from RHCP is.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers... Linky?

They weren't playing live, it seemed obvious to me. Also, at the start they weren't really into it but started having fun as they went along. I posted as a riff on the CO2 cannon theme, on a whim. Thought it was reasonably cute.
