What do you do with a cd when you don't want it anymore?

I'm sure everyone has a cd that they want to get rid of... coasters you've burned, AOL cd's, your sister's Backstreet Boyz cd that she plays over and over and over.

One way to get rid of it is to stick it in the microwave for about 3~5 seconds and watch the lightning.

It looks pretty cool both while it's cooking and after it's done.

*Disclaimer: I don't know if this is dangerous or not so don't blame me if you get hurt... especially if your sister finds out you fried her BSB cd.

They get thrown out. I remember there being a thread about donating them to the military though.. I might as well start doing that. :)

They're made of polycarbonate, so they go in the recycle bin. At least, that's where all the AOL disks they send me go.

Your city does recycle plastics, doesn't it? ;)

Side note (a bit technical) -- The major supplier of polycarbonate film, used to make polycarbonate capacitors, recently announced that they were discontinuing making the film. The capacitor makers have therefore announced that these parts would no longer be avalable. Too bad, because it is a great technology, and other substitutes are either physically bigger or not as good for many of my applications.

Therefore (getting back to the CD's), I was considering collecting everyone's discarded AOL CD's, grinding them up and dissolving them to make the film. It's my get rich quick scheme of the decade. (Yes, J/K!) ;)

It was better when AOL sent us 1.44 MB floppy's. Nobody had to buy them for years! :D :D

I picked up a new, free AOL CD cuz I needed something to keep the condensation on my glass off of my wooden computer desk.

I had some sticking up on the wall and doors, and one hanging from the rear view mirror(don't know why it's there) and one stuck on the gas door(to my car). Will yet to try to microwave one, just want to see what really happens.
