you spill H2O over the keyboard of your laptop and it's "sticky keys" now ?

Some place wanted $70 just for diagnosis. Is there a better option ? Everything else seems to work fine except the keyboard. Can it be replaced by itself ? It was bought from Dell about 2 years back.
 
Get a new keyboard? Run it through the dishwasher (keyboard only) and allow sufficient drying.

that was some water to make your keys sticky....

Anyways, you can probably remove each key one by one. They usually have these 2 metal "scissors" looking clip holding them down. They are a bitch to get back on tho.

Dried water residue causes keys to stick?
 
Take the keyboard off and run it through the dishwasher on a low setting, with no descaler/soap in there.

Give it 2-3 days to dry, then put it back together 🙂


I did this when my GF's sister dropped half a glass of orange juice on the laptop, and then proceeded to use it playing "The Sims" for another 2 hours :roll: It was as sticky as hell. Once through the dishwasher, it was fine 🙂

Dry it using a hair dryer. Or just plug an external keyboard to it temporarily and use it until the laptop keyboard completey dries.
 
Like several other people have said already: take it apart, wash the keyboard, let it dry. A friend of mine spilled Coke on her laptop, took it apart and washed it, and it works fine now.
 
Some things you people need to understand:

- a college girl has it and is far away right now. No dishwasher is available, nor would she be capable of taking the keys/keyboard off anyway.
- she would not lie about spilling just water on it - I verified with her it was just water

I was hoping that you guys can tell me this place or that place should charge less to take care of the problem. Anyone know about large retail chain repair shops like Best Buy ? Anything is better than her doing it herself, I'm sure.

It's really not hard to take the outside components of a laptop apart. Just a few screws. Taking it to Best Buy or another shop will get her ripped off.

If not diswasher, just tell her to wash it by hand and let it dry for a few days. It really isn't very hard.
 
You're laptop's documentation or docs on the manufacturer's website should have instructions for taking off the keyboard. You can probably get a new one off ebay if she can't clean it. I would tell her to remove it quickly.
 
So when you say "sticky keys," do you mean that they're physically sticky or that they're sticking when she types (so stuff comes out like tttthisssss)?

I'm not sure that a dishwasher could fix that.

You're telling me -- I accidentally popped my backspace key off on Monday and it took an hour of frustration until my gf took it away from me and fixed it.

Now I have to call her "sir" and wash her car. 🙁

yes like thattttttttt. The spill happened a week ago she said.
