One time I remember waiting on a bench. They hadn't used it for a while (maybe 5-10 min), so I moved it out of their work out area started using it. Now at this site there was a national weightlifting champion. It turned out it was a bench that he and his cronies were planning on using. He flips out on me, his 4-5 friends stand behind him. I point out that no one had used it for a while, we were out of benches, and they all had to come running from staring in the mirror to stop me from taking it.

Maybe it's bragging but I'd have beat the holy heck out of him I think, however, the other 4-5 guys would have changed that equation. I've taken beatings before but I decided it wasn't worth it.

All I could think was steroids.

same thing at the squat rack. People hang around it for 30 minutes but only use it 3 minutes of it.

You just aren't alpha enough to berate him about how he's poor, and show him your guns, and say you'll sex his mother, then drive away in your M3. Like a boss.

But next time, if you're not into all the stuff I just said, then offer to share. I've never ran into anyone who wouldn't share equipment between sets.

OP: He probably WAS using it. He was only a few seconds away and you failed to detect any signals, but- so what?

Just jovially say "oh that's cool, we'll just work in together!"

People who are there to work out will work in with you. People who are there to see yoga pants will just take their protein shake mixer and leave.

Just scratch your man-parts a bit, and say, "Ugh, I think that girl had crabs!" Pretty sure they will want to avoid anything that you've been around. 😛

I normally don't have issues being one of the bigger guys in the gym. But it's funny you mention race because the only people I've had issues with this is black guys(not being racist at all) One time a guy proceeded to start taking the 475lbs off the bar while I was getting a drink, maybe away from the rack for 30 seconds, while he was on the phone with someone. He was nice and apologized and helped put the weight back when I told him I was there.

If I was obviously using it, scoff. Ask to have it back. Once, a guy took my squat rack. I had walked away to go pee and hit a super set elsewhere, left my phone, keys, and bag next to it with all my weights still on. He took all my weights off and turned all my stuff into the front desk. Said he thought I left it all behind. The gym was basically empty. What did I do? Rack up the other squat rack that was 10 feet away from where I was just at.

JEEZ GO BUY A BENCH/ SQUAT RACK i bought two n the last week 😉 second one was to good of deal to pass up after i bought the 300$ one off Craigslist with pull down Olympic weights etc.. This is the exact reason i rather not deal with fitness centers that dont seem to be open when i want them to be or full of people when i do.

Oh. Come. On.

You left the room and he turned your stuff in. Clearly, he really did think you had left. You act like it was unreasonable when what you should have done was thank him and realize that you should save your future bathroom breaks for when you are done with a particular piece of equipment rather than holding it up and keeping others from using it.

GENIUS!

Tell him you didn't know and if he minded that you work in with him. Instead the OP runs here. Surprised you didn't try and find out what he drove and block him in with your car, db.

You say "sorry but I'm using it" and then you use it in the wimpiest way possible as to piss him off.

I saw no one at the squat rack and I wanted to use it. I was there for about 5 seconds and this black guy came up to me and said "I'm using it."

I stood there with a WTF look but I let him have it because I didn't want to fight him. I wanted to hit him on the head with a dumbell when he wasn't looking.

What do you when someone at the gym tries to strong arm you away from the equipment you are using?

My response to folks like that is to say, "Hey, look at me? Now look at you. Now that we have established who "needs" this equipment more, lets be reasonable and share."

This works great for me, but probably because I'm that oh so rare combination of fatass and muscular.
