What do you do to save screen real estate?

My new laptop (xps m1210) has a small lcd - 12". It has a decent res though at 1280x800.

I've already reduced the size of the navigation buttons - and am trying to get used to an 'auto-hiding' start menu..

any other suggestions? The tabs in firefox take up a lot of space, but they're too useful to give up.
