So what's $160k 1099 equivalent to salaried? not counting other perks.

1099 - play flat 35% (or is it 39% now? I haven't had 1099 income in a few years) to the feds to cover income tax and social security.

W-2 - Pay ~15-20% total to the feds to cover income tax and social security. (I think SS is a flat 5%, your income tax level varies with income amount.)

$160k x 0.65 = 0.80 x $____

For W-2 employees, your employer is paying payroll taxes as well. If you're self-employed, you're responsible for both halves.

Director - Accounting. Slightly over $210K with bonus this year. Could be lower next year if bonus isn't as good.

So you do 1099 and w-2. Does the w-2 know you're doing the 1099. If not we need to bring IndyColt in here to straighten things out. I mean it's unethical and all. It's not the way to get by.

Could easily pull 30-50% more with OT but I like spending time with the family. We have guys pulling 1300 OT hrs/yr over here but of course they have no wife/children.

Please learn to read. He's explaining the difference, not claiming to do both. He even says he hasn't had 1099 income in a few years. I've bolded it for you.

So about $130k but no benefits?

Some places do 1099 differently though. My sister works for Kaiser on 1099, but she has health insurance and 401k...

I think the only solution here is a SO salary poll!

Mine is a teacher and pulls in a whopping $40k. But that's supplemented with a decent chunk of side tutoring income which I'm not going to explain in any more detail.

I run a restaurant and make 40k + bonuses.

I'm a lobbyist, and what I make is:
1) None of your flapping business, and
2) Less than you probably think lobbyists make

If you make more than $2k/mo you make too much.
Lobbyists should be outlawed.

About 2000hrs of instruction is required to take the tests for the FAA airframe and power plant license. There are colleges that offer courses but you can get the required hours in the military.
For my airline you will need at least 5 years of heavy aircraft experience to apply. It's not an easy field to get into and I'd never recommend it to anyone.

I make about 80k working as a product support engineer for a large manufacturing conglomerate. Benefits are nice (6% 401k match, 3% on top, stock purchase program, bonus, training for next role, etc).

My fiancee makes about the same, but being in the Midwest and DINKs, we make quite a bit.

I make 70K base, with 10-20k(ish) a year in extra per-diems, overtime, and travel pay. Not counting benefits and pension.

Non destructive testing inspection and R&D in the nuclear industry. I work at one of Canada's national labs (out in the boonies) where my fluffy government job title is "Research and development technical officer".

Edumacation was in Physics.

SO is self employed and currently only funds her student loans with income (pfft you other lucky sods).

Mines a pharmacist, there is practically no chance in me catching up with her, unless I go and get a CCIE or become a contractor.

What the hell does a pharmacist actually do?

The only thing I know of for sure is they take 1/2 hour to verify my prescriptions. That come pre-boxed. I assume they don't even put the sticker on the box :colbert:
