What do you do & how much do you make?

I work in a NOC, I make 80k-98k, depending on how broke the network gets.

I put most of it into retirement though, I had a couple years after college working jobs that paid around 30k, trying to catch up.

IT Consulting $105k in the Midwest. I could have jumped ship to industry for 180k but it wasn't worth it. I like the experience and 40hr weeks that I'm getting in my current role.

My wife works in a 80+ hr workweek environment. Many people constantly get extremely sick from the stressful environment despite the great salaries at her firm.

Let's get the dumb 250K/yr jokes out of the way. I'll start as a gesture of good will- IT PM, 120K. I actually liked being a contractor when I was pulling more ($158K~). I'm not getting any younger and I feel like I'm just a middle of a pack and never made anything BIG of myself.

i make about the same, also in the midwest, in software development.

kids are making more straight out of college in SF, but whatever. i got a pension that'll be worth more than social security by the time i retire (will probably pay the equivalent of safe withdrawals from 1$M). and never any chance of working more than 40 hours a week. and almost no meetings, just writing code. i like it.

i also live on 25$k per year, so ATOT minimum wage goes a long way.

I'll also note I tend to make more every time I switch somewhere else. It's funny. When I work somewhere they tend to give the 2-3% raise per year, but after a year if I switch to a different business I've always gone up at least 10% minimum. Sad that it works out that way. Prefer sticking with one place for the long run and stability, but it has never made much sense although I do try to stick it out for at least 2 years at a place. Besides the military, longest place I've worked at was for 3 years, although it was a DoD contractor and technically I switched contracts twice with the same company which is sort of like being rehired somewhere else, but the same place. Because I got a sizable pay increase in doing so.

the scene is swingin! in fact, i have gone lindy hopping, east coast swinging, and charleston-ing quite a few times at a local college.

but i never was very good at it, and all the girls wanted to dance with guys who didnt suck at it, so i quit

my problem was i couldn't chain special moves together very well, so i would lead with the same default dance steps for 20 measures at a time. then the girls would get bored. they should have played me at soul caliber, i am way better at chaining in that

Yea this is pretty much established.

I rarely got any worthy salary within one company. Everytime I made 10 to even 40% raise was by hopping jobs.

I have no problem working 80+ hours as long as I own a good chunk of the company. It's stupid to work those hours for someone else though.

Right now I'm positioning myself be a strategy director/CFO for a mid-sized company. If I worked in industry right now I would only get to learn one process, one set of books, one way of doing forecasting, etc.

A few months ago they changed my team from exempt to non-exempt, which for those who don't know, means salary to hourly. Our payscale and bonus % did not change.

The jury is still out if this is good or bad though. The entire team logs many hours of overtime, so the extra overtime boost will be a very nice pay raise (same hours, but no longer working for free) plus they pay premium overtime if you work 12 hours in a day. So far, they aren't harassing or making us justify the overtime, but we shall see. The only down side so far is we no longer get comp time and less flexibility in our ability to step away for a few hours a day to do things that need to get done.

I will say I miss my consulting days, but I don't miss the constant months of travel.
