What do you dislike about Windows 7?

Just installed the beta program and things are alittle different coming from xp. So far with the little I've done with it I've discovered there is no more classic menus, everything seems to be hidden some where, line spacing in Wordpad is screwed up unless you unclick the 10 point space between paragraphs, don't care for internet explorer windows to be hidden unless you move your mouse over the icon, etc, etc.

What has everyone else found wrong or didn't like?

Really nothing yet. I think you have a problem with it because it is new to you. There is a big difference on the whole view of it from xp. It is kind of like vista for the most part with a few different things here and there.

So far I'm unable to get on the internet with it. I need to make sure I have the correct drivers loaded.

I figured it out, for some reason it didn't like being behind my Vonage router which is behind my DD-WRT Linksys router. I hooked it straight to my DD-WRT Linksys Router and it's connected now. Never thought that would be an issue because this same computer with Windows 7 is also my Fedora 10/Ubuntu 8 box that both connect to the internet just fine behind my Vonage Router.

i dont like that i cant arrange the content in a folder to 'last modiied' or size etc easily (as in, without right clicking). makes it a pain to find specific files in a folder quickly

other than that, it's vista with a twist. same as going from 2k to xp

The start button doesn't look right.

The theme is boring.

Lack of killer feature...Vista with less features but a little faster supposedly. Maybe add face recognition software for people's photo collections.

Takes up to much hard drive space...takes longer with Acronis and the images are bigger.

I still hate the title bar buttons.

A pain to find a feature and enable it, disable it or change it.

well, i just disabled UAC again. why no option to set it like a firewall - ask once, choose 'always remember' but prompt again if something changes (program update or virus).

I agree on the prompts action. I clicked it one lower and it seems the same as default.

Because thats too easily circumvented by a decently written virus. A firewall is a different beast altogether. Thats why the whole screen gets blanked when a UAC prompt comes up, because anything less than total protection would make the entire system pointless.

I really hate that they took the sidebar out. They really didnt need to do that. They could have turned it off by default, but whats in there now is a total mess.

I cant just have that bar on the left that doesnt get covered when I maximize. I can set the individual gadgets to be always on top, but then theyre on top of whatever window I maximize.

And god forbid I line them up on the left side and actually decide to save something to the desktop. The icons will then be under the gadgets, and completely invisible and unclickable. Sigh.

At least they need to make the gadgets not cover the icons. Thats absurd.

That's my biggest peeve so far. The sidebar's very useful to me, and free floating gadgets are about inversely useful. I'd use Google Desktop, but Vista's sidebar and gadgets are much better.

Like it so far, then again, I didn't mind Vista all that much after SP1. Had ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop for a week after having vista premium. Now it has windows 7 on it and will probably stay that way for a while.

I agree, the sidebar was very, very helpful for me using the weather and calendar widgets.

And I really like how you can just click an icon for a gadget to expand it, which would be particularly useful for the weather.

I cant understand why they took it out. I can understand why they turned it off by default, but why take it out entirely? I really hope they bring it back. It seems like theres a few dirty hacks out there to get the old Vista verson running, but I shouldnt have to resort to that.

Supposedly people didnt like the gadgets confined to the sidebar, and were completely unaware you could always drag them out in Vista. That worked beautifully for me - I had the mini weather in the bar, and a second larger weather gadget on the desktop which would get covered.

Theyve certainly improved how the gadgets behave on the desktop with the docking behavior, but that sidebar was so sweet. 🙁

Honestly? No offense, but these are pretty weak arguments.

It's round. At least it looks more modern than a dull, gray box and less gaudy than a lime green oval on a bright blue taskbar.

The theme is boring.

If it was "more exciting" people would whine that it was too loud, just like with XP.

Lack of killer feature...Vista with less features but a little faster supposedly.

Do you even have it installed? It's faster than you might expect. THAT, in and among itself, is a killer feature.

Maybe add face recognition software for people's photo collections.

Maybe not.

Takes up to much hard drive space...takes longer with Acronis and the images are bigger.

It was 6 or 7GB when I first installed it and that's taking into account the 3GB it reserves for Hibernation. In a time when 10GB represents between 1 and 10% of the average person's HDD, 6 or 7 for the OS is no problem.
As for performance in Acronis...They (meaning the makers of Acronis, not MS) have at least 6 months to fix their back-up software before W7 goes gold. Send them a message about it if it concerns you so.

I still hate the title bar buttons.

Love it or leave it, sorry to say, but it looks like it's here to stay.

A pain to find a feature and enable it, disable it or change it.

Once you know where they've put everything, it won't be a pain. I'm sure my mother-in-law thinks using her XP PC is a pain, too, but simply because she doesn't know how to use it.

Vista is a good operating system that somehow most people think is awful for some reason. These people seem to think Windows 7 is the second coming despite the fact that it's really just Vista with a few tweaks.

That and the taskbar.

Definitely my biggest, if not only, gripe at the moment. My band-aid is to make my default window size simulate a bar being there, but thats just dumb. I might give desktop coral another go and see if i can get it to work. My issue was that it would bump the gadgets outside it as well as everything else.

You are exactly right. Vista was popular to be hated on by people who had never even used it nor experienced any problems with it. The bandwagon was formed, and now, everyone acts as if W7 is the true successor to XP, when in fact, W7 is just Vista evolved.

I think their justification of not having a docking bar like in Vista is to point you to the "Show Desktop" glass icon in the lower-right. If you hover over that icon for a second or two, it'll make all windows disappear as long as you are hovering. Then, you can see your desktop, icons, and any gadgets present. This way, you get more screen for your programs without having to keep the dock bar on top of everything, plus it's a quick second to view your gadgets with multiple windows open.

I think I can actually live with this solution.

Interesting... i wonder if there is a hotkey for this? I'd be just peachy if there was a key combo we could hold down to reveal the desktop.

edit: if you're interested, i did get coral *mostly* working. I have transparent mode off, opacity set to 0, and preserve desktop icon locations enabled. Gadgets stay in, and windows stay out, so long as i don't reboot. Then i have to drag them back in.

This phenomenon is bizzare. I'll reserve judgment as I haven't used the beta yet, but from everything I've seen and read it's Vista with some UI tweaks but everyone is absolutely enamored with it 😕
